2014: Sign-ups!

→ THE BASICS

The basic of idea of ficmix is to select a fic from your assigned author's masterlist and 'remix' it! You can do this by rewriting it from the perspective of another character, writing a prequel, sequel, or introducing a foreign element into it :) As long as you keep the pairing and/or general plot the same, you can do almost anything you want!

A more in-depth description of this exchange can be found here. Please make sure you read it all as it contains information about deadlines, dropping out, etc.

Please keep in mind that since this is a fic exchange, you'll be writing something for someone, and someone else will be writing something for you, which means that we'd prefer zero drop-outs. Of course, it's understandable that something may come up and you simply can't finish the fic in time - but please let us know beforehand so we can organise a pinch hit in time and no one is left without a fic. The final date you can let us know by is the 20th of August.

→ REQUIREMENTS

To participate as a remixer, you must have a requirement of at least five 100 word fics (or drabbles) or three 500 word fics, or a combination of both. Your safe story will not be included in your minimum. For a more indepth explanation, please refer to the information post linked earlier.

After you've done that, feel free to fill out one of the forms and post it in the comments below!

→ REMIXER FORM
Please use the FICMIX 2014 Signups form found here.

→ PINCH HIT FORM:
Please use the FICMIX 2014 Pinch hit form found here.

→ QUESTIONS

If you have any questions, feel free to PM us, send an email to k.ficmix@gmail.com, or post a comment on the information post (unscreened).

Is a masterlist necessary/compulsory?
The simple answer is yes. Do not link a tag on your journal and community and tell us (and eventually, your remixer) to go through all the entries under the tag because that is quite unreasonable and chances are, none of us will have time. This might sound unreasonable now, especially if you have say, only three fics, but if you do have more, then it's quite difficult for other people to navigate through the different entries to find a suitable fic to remix. Creating a masterlist doesn't make much time, depending on how organised you want it to be, and it really only requires a link to the fic, the rating, the fandom, pairing/character-focus and probably a summary and/or wordcount.

In the same vein, this might sound stupid but please unlock all of your fic. If your remixer has to join your community/friend you to access your fic, then that ruins the surprise of who it is! And that's half the fun :(

What is a safe story*?
It is a story that your remixer is not allowed to remix. Please note, though, you are only allowed to designate one story as a safe story. If you think there's more than one story that you might want to designate as 'safe', you will have to choose only one.

(NOTE: Your safe story doesn't go towards your required minimum.)

I have a fic that I'd like to make my safe story but it's split into different chapters - would I still be able to make it my safe story?

Because it's still technically one "story", yes. Just make sure you link all chapters in your application, or if they're all tagged with a specific tag in your community/journal, you can link that instead. Also keep in mind that this means that your chaptered story will only count as one story towards your minimum.

What about wips?

Unfortunately, only finished fics will be allowed to be remixed. Please do not include unfinished stories in your minimum as your remixer won't be allowed to remix them.

Is it alright if I only use a line/a few lines as inspiration? How about a drabble?

Both are fine as long as there are clear links to the original fic.

What do you mean by "Have you participated in ficmix before?: (if so, who did you remix?)"

It's as exactly as it sounds - if you've participated in ficmix before, we ask that you answer yes and link to the remixes you’ve written. We'll try to prevent you from being assigned the same remixee, but there is a slight chance you might be assigned them again. Remember that you don't have to remix the same fic as last time, though!

But can I remix a remix?

No, you can't.

What about if my remixee posts fics later on? Can I remix them?

Yes. If your remixee posts a fic later on, after signups are closed for example, you will be allowed to remix it. If, however, you post a fic in July/August and you don't want your remixer to remix it, then we ask that you lock it or you don't post it until after the competition is over. Basically, any fic that isn't unfinished or designated as a safe story is up for grabs. This is just to prevent any confusion.

Can my remixee remix fics that are collaborations between me and someone else?

No. Since they aren't 100% your own work, your remixee won't be permitted to remix them. This also means that they won't be counted in your fic minimum.

I decided to write a fic where the main pairing is about a minor pairing mentioned in the original fic - is that okay?

That's absolutely fine! When we say that you can't change the main pairing of the fic, we mean that you cannot actually change the pairing in the original fic (eg. the original fic has Jonghyun/Key but you want to write a remix on Jonghyun/Onew). If you decide to change the focus to that of a minor pairing mentioned in the original fic (eg. Taemin/Minho is mentioned as a minor pairing) then that's fine as long as you draw links between the two fics and at least mention the original pairing (Jonghyun/Key, in this case). In that way, you're only shifting the focus and not actually changing the main pairing. (I hope this makes sense!)

→ TIMEFRAME

Sign ups will open on the 29th of June and close at midnight (KST) on the 9th of July. Times referred to will be in KST.
