you have a couple of options, you can de-friend them; they might notice, they might not.
OR, when they make a post, there's a little thing on the side (just hover your mouse to the right), it says "hide"
basically, it hides all their little posts without actually de-friending them or anything, your posts will show up on hers as usual, and they'll never know! ^_^
FB doesn't notify you if you've been defriended (oh, the potential for drama there...); the only thing she'll notice is that her friends count will go down (if she pays attention at all), but she won't know it's you unless she winnows through her f-list with a fine-toothed comb.
If, for some reason, you decide you want to still be friends with her, but you just don't want to see her vitriol spewed all over your feed, you can "Hide" her postings from your wall by clicking on the Options on her next post (I think you can also do this under regular Settings somewhere).
I had a lot of fun going through a formerly really liberal friend's Sarah Palin joygasming. It was wonderful. *cough* I think I avoided this by . . . logging into FB about once a month. Which I still do. Because I suck at life. orz GLAD HIDE WORKS FOR YOU /pointless comment
