Yeah, if they had kept up that sort of pace for the whole series, it would have been crazy. It still annoys me a bit that they went so fast with it, but since it's fair to assume most of the people watching this have seen the first series or the manga I guess it was wise to do so.
It won't stand up well to re-watching though. I'm betting a lot of people will skip out on the early DVDs.
