So, if I move the wool between the needles so that it sits on the other side of the work when I move between knit and purl (and vice versa) then those strange-looking extra stiches don't appear.  Yay for repetitive ripping and quiet thinking ( Read more... )

Heh ... you hold the yarn at the back to knit and in front to purl :)

Exactly!

Am finding the terminology a little tricky too, I grew up hearing about wool and skeins rather than yarn and hanks.

I grew up with 'wool' too ... but, not all yarn is wool, you see.

'Skein' is still in common usage ...
