Eureka!
So, if I move the wool between the needles so that it sits on the other side of the work when I move between knit and purl (and vice versa) then those strange-looking extra stiches don't appear. Yay for repetitive ripping and quiet thinking!
This extra halfstep isn't in the 'idiot's guide to knitting' book that I bought, even in the included patterns, must have needed the 'complete idiot's guide' instead. Roll on scarf knitted with such white knuckled tension that it will have to be for a doll on completion! :)
