8Db If you know what chord to play [ usually music sheets have chords over a measure bar ], then you have a pretty good idea what it supposed to sound like. For example you have an G chord in a measure, or your Left hand is playing a combination or series of G, B, D. Most likely the note is either a G, B or a D. If it doesn't sound right, the right tone falls somewhere near that, like an F#. That's how I guess the sound.

When I try to play the music by ear (which is ALL the time -_-), I use chords/arpeggios to guess the right sound. Then I guess the melody through the chords. Or...it could be the other way around. Some of the keys in my piano are ugh dead and I haven't repaired them, so the need to play a song in a lower or higher key is important for me. -_-
