Up periscope (books, movies and potato salad)

An update on this and that...

On the whole, it was a pleasant Memorial Day weekend.

I made a double batch of potato salad at my wife's request.  One of the few areas where our tastes diverge, she likes onion on this dish, and I have a limited tolerance for raw onion, so I fried the offending vegetable in butter and then added it to the rest of the ( Read more... )

Yeah, mowing our 1 acre lot was one of my jobs when I was growing up. With the riding lawnmower I actually didn't mind it. Very fresh in my mind was the years when we only had two push mowers (only about half the grass back then, but still ( ... )

Actually, the premise of the visit _is_ believable - once you're inside the perimeter, the non-tour areas of the White House are somewhat accessible, if and only if you have someone on the inside who's got access. When the president is in the White House, the security is rather tight, but when the presidential family is away, there is a long-standing tradition of White House insiders giving unauthorized tours.

It all boils down to insider access - ask Mrs. Ghandi about that.

I'm sorry to hear that Prince Caspian wasn't very faithful to the book. I was just telling my husband that while I wanted to skip The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, because I couldn't imagine having them get it right, Prince Caspian would make a great movie and I couldn't wait to see it. Now I'm thinking I should wait for the video. Care to share what you didn't like about it?

Thanks,
Hamletti

Here's the synopsis on Caspian from Wikipedia: While standing on a train station in 1941, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are magically whisked away to a beach near an old and ruined castle. They soon discover that the ruins are Cair Paravel, where they once ruled as the Kings and Queens of Narnia. Although only a year has passed in their world, 1300 years have passed in Narnia ( ... )

I haven't seen Caspian yet, but as anyone can tell from the trailer, Caspian is also a young man of 22-25 in the movie. Whereas in the book he is much younger - 12? 15?

Still, I'm planning to see it, for the visual spectacle if nothing else!

I saw Caspian and I agree the actor was much too old, as he is nearly 27. But then again as he is slated to continue the role for Dawn Treader it is almost forgivable. I thought it was pretty good for a Hollywood interpretation of a Christian allegory, though it did borrow very heavily from the LoTR. Again this is pretty forgivable as Tolkin and Lewis were part of the same literary group. My thoughts on the new Indy film are great action flick and not as bloody as the earlier movies, but the story line left a lot to be desired.
