Languages are not static entities, but dynamic, almost-living systems.

At this time of year I feel a little disconnected from the rest of Christendom. The Church I attend does not hold as much extra signifigance to Easter (the corporate line is that we " ( Read more... )

Aye, it is an "excuse" for my wife and I to visit our family's church.

Hummm, guess one thing I enjoyed about growing up in an "High Episcopal" Church is all the extra, pomp circumstance, excitement, flowers, and enthusiasm that Easter brought. It was an even bigger, more celebrated holiday than Christmas and as a kid the one I loved even more. Its such a happy holiday, and it can't be a bad thing to make a big deal over it if you feel inclined,eh??

And indeed, you are right.Language does seem to morph and grow and change. While some things are fixed and constant, other things do change in language.Even the language used among friends. There are inflections and words that are used that have special meaning in your group, and even new words that people make up together.I was oddly enough thinking that I've noticed among certain groups of friends we definatly have almost our own language and many little inside jokes and such. But alas, I'm still feeling much too silly to make much sense tonight.

No, not a bad thing to make a big deal of at all. A celebration of life, of renewal, of hope.

I find it sometimes takes a while to acclimate to the 'language' used by a new group of friends. Many things become contextual and assumed. I used to think it was a Japanese thing (though the Japanese tend to have it on a cultural level), but I found that context it important even in the smallest groups.

You make perfect sense, even through silliness!

Hope the silly mood helps bring color to your weekend :)

I think things like LoTR, science fiction, and other literature gives us a common basis for shared experience. Popular media, television shows and music, gives us temporary connections, but it's those persistent literary themes that allow us to share in our commonality (and geekdom!). I'm reminded of a Star Trek TNG episode where the crew met up with an alien culture that spoke only in terms of their own literature ("Mirab, with sails unfurled"). I wonder what kind of memes our own culture will leave to future generations...

Awww, cute story about wanting to travel back in time :) I think for the first few years of my faith I wanted to do something similar (I was in my 20s!), until it hit me that the death was not the focus, the renewal was.

Good thing that there are not many people wearing Roman garb at Cons and SCA events :-)
