Languages are not static entities, but dynamic, almost-living systems.

At this time of year I feel a little disconnected from the rest of Christendom. The Church I attend does not hold as much extra signifigance to Easter (the corporate line is that we " ( Read more... )

Well, thats good to know that I was making sense.Sometimes we(I) just get into very, very silly modes. In fact I'm still in one.ackkkkk.

But your right, context is important,in all groups. But I find it very helpful when I know people very well, and know their minds better so to speak,so I can better understand and imagine what they are imagining when I'm describing,or explaining something. And know that they are imagining something very much like I am.Hence also knowing my mind in return and sharing a more common vision.

IE: When I say things about Elven Rangers,or fighting the good fight,I know that you know what I mean.Where as a total stranger would problably not understand what I was imagining in my mind.In fact total stranger would think I was looney tunes.

I'm not around my one Aunt from Japan very often any more, but wish I was,she was very interesting to talk to.sigh.But perhaps we will have a family reunion or something soon.

And indeed, what could be a better thing to celebrate than Hope and renewal of Life? Two big things that mean much to me.I remember as a little girl the crucifiction story used to send me into uncontrollable sobbing,I wasn't one of those children who took it well at all.In fact I told my Mom when I was really small, that I wanted a time machine so I could go back in time and stop those "bad men".So Easter Day was really special,to a little kid,its a happy ending to a very sad story.(though to this day I am not comfortable around anyone wearing old roman garb,is that silly??)

Hope the silly mood helps bring color to your weekend :)

I think things like LoTR, science fiction, and other literature gives us a common basis for shared experience. Popular media, television shows and music, gives us temporary connections, but it's those persistent literary themes that allow us to share in our commonality (and geekdom!). I'm reminded of a Star Trek TNG episode where the crew met up with an alien culture that spoke only in terms of their own literature ("Mirab, with sails unfurled"). I wonder what kind of memes our own culture will leave to future generations...

Awww, cute story about wanting to travel back in time :) I think for the first few years of my faith I wanted to do something similar (I was in my 20s!), until it hit me that the death was not the focus, the renewal was.

Good thing that there are not many people wearing Roman garb at Cons and SCA events :-)

That is a question to wonder about. What will future generations think if they were to sit down and read our journals and memes,etc..Would it make sense or would things get lost in translation? Hummm, missed that ST episode, but sounds like a really interesting one that sparks interesting thoughts as well.

And indeed, your totally correct in that the strong literary connections are the ones that go the deepest and last the longest and tend to have a language and kinda a culture all of its own.Its pretty cool I think.:-)

And indeed,I'm also glad ther aren't too many roman re-enactors at events or cons.My friends and BF know about my "Roman solider fear" and they might just get a giggle out of my uncontrollably leary expression. ;-)
