I have this desperate compulsion to make a Hedwig icon.
The only thing stopping me is the thought that people who haven't yet had the opportunity to read the first 50 pages of the book might wonder why I have this sudden compulsive need for Hedwig icons

You're really kind. I have seen so many icons that outright state character deaths on them. I don't really care for [character] RIP icons in any case because I've always thought RIP was a little disrespectful as a phrase simply because it's an abbreviation.
Also (and behold me trying to be non-spoilery here), as to the two characters for which I was writing to you about and asking you to write a fic, I saw an icon that said: "where are x and y? they are both dead!"
Also, as someone who is a smart person, do you ever feel offended by the hordes of non-HP fans who don't just dislike HP but also have a sort of literary/intellectual snobbery towards it? I admit, I am very scathing about Dan Brown books and hated the DaVinci Code but I do not assume that people who read Dan Brown = lower than lower/stupid! :P I just bag out the books :D
I give them my best non-reaction and remind myself that I have a degree in English Language and Literature. Quite apart from reading Harry Potter, I collect various series of twentieth century children's literature, and I can't see that it's in any way, shape or form a demeaning activity. It is, in fact, exactly like the people who don't get that you can be an adult and enjoy reading comics. Or enjoy watching science fiction on television. (Apparently it's somehow okay to go and watch it at the cinema, provided you don't obsess about it afterwards.)
There were examples of both types of that snobbery while I was queueing on Friday night. There was one Kiwi guy in the queue behind me, who clearly had no intention of reading the book, and was being rather funny about it to his friends. He was queueing to buy it for someone else, and as far as I can see was there more for the experience of the ritual than anything else. His snobbery took the form of declaring that it wasn't a patch on fantasy series X. Then there were the stragglers

I don't have it in my hot little hands yet

And resisting reading spoilers is a serious test of my will-power and I wonder how much longer I can wait. I was dumb. I ordered my copy from Amazon, but it has to ship to my APO so GAWD only knows when it will arrive. I assume this week sometime. I am nearly tempted to go buy the copy at the pX and return my Amazon copy to the pX when it arrives. Ethics shmecics. I just don't think I can hold off much longer. And it doesn't help when my husband says to me, "How does it feel not to be reading HP knowing the rest of the world is..." Rubbing salt into the wound, he is. UG.

Erk! I sympathise. I did consider an online retailer but when i found out that I was definitely going to be able to buy it locally, I scampered off to order in Wangfujing. I suppose you could always buy it and then donate the other book to someone? :D Seems like there's an excess of copies. There was someone on my friends list who was very sad that she didn't have the funds to buy the book and her mother wasn't buying it for her so I sent her a gift voucher for the book on the same day her kindly father went out and bought it! :D So there's multiple HPs floating around everywhere :D
And it doesn't help when my husband says to me, "How does it feel not to be reading HP knowing the rest of the world is..." Rubbing salt into the wound, he is. UG. Man, did you glare at him? :) I would have!

I did glare at him and probably made some sort of unthankful comment!
I am sending him to the pX today to buy the book--in fact my words to him were, "Don't come home without Harry Potter..." :-)
According to amazon.com they haven't even shipped my copy yet which irratats me as it should have shipped by now. Sometimes they can be so frustrating.
I think that most LJ comms will likely be on spoiler fic watch for a while, so the only place that I can think of to post fic would be FanFiction.Net.
As for the icons, if people are putting off the book, then they really have no right to request that others not use spoilery icons. I, myself, will likely use spoilery icons in my private journal, but I won't use them on posts with icons until another week or two has passed. After that, everything's really fair game.
The fact that Draco named his kid Scorpius cracked me up, and made me think of Farscape.

I was writing over in my gj about a list of post-DH fics that someone is posting. I'm certain that there will be a separate comm sent up soon. There will have to be I suppose to take into account the fact that a lot of people won't want to have DH fic mixed in with the first 6 books.

I'm thinking of using spoilery icons at my own journal in about a week's time or so. I know there are people who are still waiting for their books, who are too busy, who wanted to finish a re-read etc. I'll see how it goes I suppose. I adore your icon by the way.
