I was writing the other day that China had agreed to permit access to Wikipedia. About an hour ago, I wasn't able to access Wikipedia and had a Bad Feeling.

Just then ship_recs sent me the link to The Nanny changes her mind: Wikipedia blocked again which says:

Put the champagne back in the bottle: China's Net Nanny has blocked Wikipedia again, both ( Read more... )

*sigh* I know, it was only unblocked for a few days. It's quite heart-breaking :|

I heard that Myspace has been blocked, too. Is that true?

I think it's really unfortunate that China has blocked Wikipedia. I've found it to be very resourceful and useful. Even though it's occasionally subject to vandalism and whatnot, I believe most of what is written is quite accurate. Plus it's so easy when you want to quickly look something up... I just immediately type into the address bar: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ and then whatever it is I want to search for! =) They have pages on practically everything!

Is there a reason it's blocked?

That's why I like wikipedia, it's a nice nutshell, consolidated, neat little explanation that is a good starting point before you go and search further afield to verify things.

The Chinese government block sites that they think may contain politically inflammatory materials. There are many such sites but I suppose wikipedia's just very high profile :P
