Random scribblings, Chinese tim tams, Chinese signs and flag-waving

Exhausted is bit of an understatement. I was about to write that I have the most shocking case of Panda Eyes from the last few days of work, but upon seeing myself in the mirror, I've decided I look more like a Wraith from Stargate Atlantis ..... or death warmed over. I wonder what the origin of the phrase death warmed over is, it's quite odd ( Read more... )

In England national flags and patriotism are very common. I like it - I think if people of some the country concentrate on good values of the past it can be very beneficial. Altogether I think England is very fair and free country - racially and nationally VERY fair in comparison with Russia. Some of the remarks which are very common in Russia (but which I really disliked - about Caucasian republics, for example) are very "no" here, at least with the circle of people I know.

But of course there is always a danger to go over-board with patriotism.

I think it all is different in Germany - their past is a very dark story for them!

I have a bag full of fake Aussie flag tattoos for sticking to my face - which I have never used :) My fear is that I'm allergic to so many things that it will cause my skin to go nuts and that would be awfully unpatriotic to obscure the Aussie flag with a rash ;)

I like the part about "making your children away from the rodentcide." Is this talking about the process of pro-creation Away from the rodentcide as opposed to IN it? :: eyebrows of shock arise::

Very Progressive Building you live in there, gal!

My building complex is obsessed with rodentcide! I'm sure I'm being poisoned to death even though I'm not a rodent because they throw so much stuff around all the time!

I just can't believe that London Guy actually did something nice and thoughtful for you!

Btw, dunno if you noticed, but I found Tim Tams and have been enjoying them a lot lately! Each time I've gone to the theater that sells them, I've bought a package, and I'm slowly eating them (and sharing them) to make them last longer. ;) Fortunately, they are less expensive than I thought they were - only $6 a package, and I alway buy the classic version, especially since the only other kind they carry is some carmel version.

I hope you slept well and that tomorrow is a better day. :) *shoots daggers at obnoxious work and deadlines* Don't they know our Koala needs her rest?!

I did indeed! I was commenting about Vegemite and you said: 'hey, when you have something as delicious as Tim Tams to crave, who needs Vegemite?' Hee!

Ah you are wise! Classic version is the best, the rest are just strange mutations ... and don't even get me started on how I feel about the caramel ones ;)

Rodenticide will be my new word for the day! A few thoughts on reading your comments and the article about flags: this Australia day I noticed people walking around the streets draped in Australian flags. This sight made me uncomfortable. I don't even know why I felt this way, just that I did. I'm very proud to be Australian, but I guess I associate excessive outpourings of nationalism with a kind of over the top, not quite real attitude - which might not be being fair to those who behave like this. Certainly the way the flag was used during the Cronulla riots last year really debased it - it's not "being Aussie" to run around bashing people up. At my uni this year there was a controversy during o-week when an extreme left wing group were handing out flag-burning kits. I'm in two minds about this. On the one hand, I support free speech, but on the other - people died for that flag and I don't think you dishonour their memory by burning it ( ... )

I checked my dictionary. 鼠药 shǔyào literally is 'rodenticide' rather than rat poison - which seems awfully strange to me.

I wasn't in Australia during the Cronulla riots fortunately so I don't have the same feeling. I couldn't imagine every draping myself in the flag or even wearing it but I do have my key rings and tags.

I don't really have an opinion on flag burning but I find it hard to have an opinion on anything sometimes simply because I have too many opinions :) It's like book burning - I think: "Book burning bad, very wrong" but then I think that there probably are dangerous and evil books out there or books that are pure rubbish.

As to the Tim Tams, I'm afraid that they tasted pretty awful but that's more because I don't like dark chocolate or any type of Tim Tam except Traditional Tim Tams ..... I'm a bit rabid about that ;) And yes, the Tim Tam gift was very surprising. He never rejected the Tim Tams though, he ate them but sneered at them. He seems to have developed a liking for them now though ;)
