Hmmm. Stargate Atlantis thoughts

I appear to have Cliffhangered myself.

I've been working my way through season one of Stargate Atlantis. Tonight I finished the final episode of season one (very cliffhangery) and went to reach out for my season 2 dvds ..... only to realise that I couldn't find them. Upon further reflection, I now recall that at the time I bought them, I only bought season one because I wasn't sure that I would like the series and so didn't think it wise to buy two seasons. Inexplicably, I bought four seasons of Spooks but only one season of Stargate Atlantis.

Hence, I am now Cliffhangered :P I mean I know what happens, being Evil and Spoilery, I have already gone and read every single episode summary for season two but that's really no substitute for actually watching the series. Before I get the looks of outrage, I have never pretended I was anything other than addicted to spoilers. I frequently read the last page of a book first, so nyah. Yes, I am devil spawn, just like Alex in Grey's Anatomy.

Tonight, I even had the insane notion of dashing out the door and running to the nearby dvd store to buy season 2 but then realised that it's past 11pm and the store would be closed by now and there is also no guarantee that they have it in stock :)

Stargate Atlantis took a little while to grow on me because some of the acting in the first episode was a bit off and there are far too many overly lingering, slightly melodramatic shots of Sheppard's pretty face - but I persisted and grow on me it did . Now I really like it.

Also, I have to confess that the Wraith are just deliciously evil. After having endured two seasons of BSG with its: "ambiguous villains" in the shape of the Cylons which make me introspect and ponder the divide between good and evil in humanity, revelling and wallowing in the complexity of BSG's depiction of the 'enemy' etc, it's a blessed relief to have a show where the bad guys are just simply and unambiguously - bad :) Sure they might eventually give me a Wraith with a heart of gold who never knew his father and just wants to get in touch with his inner Sensitive New Age Wraith, but at this stage, the Wraith are just nice and - evil. They're also predictable. Every single Wraith the good guys meet always says: "You will die! We will feed! Your time will come! You cannot escape! We're gonna get you and your little dog, too!!" etc etc.

I really like Sheppard and Weir a lot - separately and together. Sheppard is noble and interesting and comes up with some funny one liners, plus he's just so damned adorable. Weir is tough and smart without being pompous and I love how together she is.

I like them as a pairing even though canon doesn't really support it. I suppose the problem is, Sheppard gets to do lots of cool things like fly puddlejumpers and go through the Stargate whereas Weir just gets to stay back on Atlantis, walk around on the balcony and make inspirational speeches over the PA system.

I can see why there's a lot of Sheppard/McKay material out there but it's basically just that they get along really well and care about each other. Seems like every time there is friendship between two characters of the same gender, they must be slashed. I learnt this when I first started watching Due South. Harry in When Harry Met Sally set that men and women can't just be friends, these days men and men can't be friends and women and women can't just be friends..... In the fan fic world, as soon as it gets cold and people must huddle together for body warmth or there is a time of stress and life must be reaffirmed, there is wild and raunchy slashy and non-slashy sex ;)

All I can say is that it reminds me of this icon:

*giggle*

I like McKay - he's funny and has classic lines but he's a bit like Baltar for me - arrogant genius and that sort of thing. He doesn't do much for me but perhaps I will grow to love him in season 2. At this stage my favourite characters are Sheppard, Weir and the doctor Carson Beckett who is a hoot and is totally phobic about sitting in the 'weapon chair' of the ancients.

As I mentioned above, the Wraith are excellent and they're very scary - they're like vampires.

I think that they are giving me nightmares though because they're like a horror film. I had a dream the other night night - I saw someone sitting back in a bath tub, relaxing and then suddenly he/she realised that he/she was being impaled through the chest with a skeletal arm. Can you imagine how disturbing that was for me? :P I ordinarily don't have 'horror dreams'. My dreams frequently have a plot and storyline, but they're usually suspense/drama/ambling human interest story - it's rare that I have a Horror Dream.

I love it that Sheppard tells Ford that he isn't allowed to name things yet he names captive Wraiths things like 'Steve' and 'Bob' because they refuse to tell their names.

I love the idea that they go to Atlantis - I've always been very fascinated by Atlantis and it's an interesting twist on a familiar old legend. The episode where Weir meets an older version of herself was just incredibly creepy to me. First of all, being left all alone in Atlantis, secondly aging through 10,000 years? Ick. That's almost as scary as being buried alive - I always hated descriptions about being buried alive.

Teyla grew on me. I originally found her rather annoying - a bit too Jennifer Lopez wannabe for me plus she has an annoying way of occasionally talking like a caveman when she remembers she's supposed to be all tribal and that, but as the series develops, she comes across as very admirable, brave and has a very cool fighting style :)

I can't help wondering the episode Poisoning the well in which the Stargate team help the Hoff develop a vaccination against the Wraith which turns out to have possible weapons usage as well. While I can understand their philosophy for opposing a mass vaccination prior to testing have been carried out, I can't help wondering why they didn't take some of the serum with them .... in the battle that I was just watching at the end of season one, wouldn't bullets filled with that 'anti Wraith' juice be much more cost effective and environmentally friendly than pumping Wraiths full of lead with conventional weapons?

Also, the Genii are the most annoying people in the world. I do love how when Teyla and Ford are taken prisoner, their captors manage to change out of their Amish costumes into faux-fascist uniforms at some unspecified point in time between the surface and the underground :)

I'm looking forward to watching season two. Apparently a new main character is introduced in the form of Ronon "When I grow up I wanna be an Uruk-Hai" Dex:

I went and collected a whole bunch of Stargate Atlantis user icons I like here but most of them are Sheppard/Weir-centric .... Now I feel the need to try to find some well-written Sheppard/Weir fan fic .....

Which Stargate: Atlantis character are you?
