Agreed. But this one should'nt cost her a penny. Getting votes without spending much is an art that our politicians have not mastered.

It may not cost her a penny, but it may cost her more "political wealth". Otherwise, I don't see any reason for her not to take the action. After all, she's also interested in "virtue" a bit.

You are just talking about Madras _and_ a negligent number of voters who happen to be in the middle income group _and_ those who take the time to go cast their vote. The core of her voting population is outside Madras. Places where seeing an Auto is like sighting an UFO.

Though my experiences in Madras was a major factor behind the post, the situation at Hosur, a smallish town, is no different. And I do not think the situation at mid-sized metros like Coimbatore, Madurai is very different.

_and_ a negligent number of voters who happen to be in the middle income group _and_ those who take the time to go cast their vote.

If government employees and their unions can tilt the scales in her favour, so can a rationalized auto fare and a massive publicity campaign on the same. Such an announcement will surely make a lot of people, hitherto lazy, get off their butts and vote. It is something that will have an impact on every town/city that has a decent number of autos plying around.
