Summary: Back then, Taemin would have told you were crazy if you said he'd fall for her.
There was a time when Taemin could hear the sound of Jinri's footsteps thundering down the hall, her hair sticking out in all directions after coming to a skidding stop in front of his rehearsal room. He was a bit overwhelmed by the stars in her eyes and the high pitched voice she adopted when she greeted him, and he'd say one or two words to her and smile before gently excusing himself and resuming his dance practice. But now it's his footsteps that echo as he bolts down the hallway to meet her, nearly tripping over his shoelaces. He knocks on the door of the rehearsal room and beams when Jinri answers it.
"You're right on time," she says smiling. "We just finished."
"I'll walk you home?" Taemin asks.
"You always do," Jinri says and Taemin laughs and grabs her duffle bag.
In the past, Taemin would get roped into walking Jinri home, and her voice was static in his ears as she talked about the math lesson she didn't understand in class, the Labrador Retriever puppy in the window of the pet store, and the rose pink skirt she planned on wearing to her classmate's party. Halfway through the conversation, Taemin would become interested in the clouds stretching across the sky or the lint in his jean pockets, and he could help but breathe a sigh of relief when they reached her front door.
Presently, the lamp posts are lit as they start walking down the street and Taemin takes slow steps as Jinri leads the conversation. Her voice is a progression of chords that serenade Taemin, high and clear as she tells him about her trip overseas, low and almost unsteady as she talks about the upcoming photo shoot that she's worried about, fast and powerful as she rants about the last episode of When A Man Loves, and Taemin's eyes remain locked on hers as he takes in the melody. When they reach her doorstep, he pouts and lingers at the base of the porch, and Jinri laughs and pokes her head back through the front door, giving him a wave with a wiggle of her fingers.
Back then, Taemin would have told you were crazy if you said he'd fall for her, the girl with the pigtails and rainbow colored clothes who sprang to life whenever she caught the smallest glimpse of him. But the stars were in his eyes now as he raced up the stairs and kissed her goodnight.
