Wool Purchase?

Feb 07, 2009 02:32

I am taking the step to nature fibers and ditching the acrylics. I have a few patterns in mind, but I have a question about swapping yarn. Can Knit Picks "Merino Style" DK Weight be substituted for Paton's "Classic Wool"? or could i use the "Gloss Lace" from Knit Picks? I have been wanting to knit "Rogue" from "The Girl From Auntie" for some ( Read more... )

According to the Ravelry listings, Knit Picks Merino Style has been used 9 times to make that pattern, and no one seems to be reporting any problems, so I suspect it'd work out fine as a substitute. (Other KP yarns used for the pattern include Wool of the Andes, Swish Worsted, and Andean Silk.)

I suspect Gloss would be too fine a yarn for the pattern.

That said, ultimately what's most important is if you can get the gauge (number of stitches/rows per inch) that the pattern states and like the resulting fabric. (I.e. you could get 4 stitches per inch with lace weight yarn on big needles, but it'd look entirely different than 4 stitches per inch in bulky yarn on tiny needles, and also feel and behave quite differently.)

Anyway. Going by Ravelry, I suspect Merino Style would work just fine, which was your question. :)

I didn't know Knitpicks also sells yarn! This is awesome, because I'm knitpicks addicted :-) And it's affordable as well.
But Knitpicks doesn't ship outside the US!! That's not pretty nice :-(
Are there any online-shops were you can purchase the knitpicks yarns?

Knitpicks is online only, and they've developed their own brand, so unless you can find lots on eBay, you're out of luck finding it on other websites.

You might be able to find someone who will receive the yarn for you and ship it to you, however.

I just thought, because you can get the needles (nearly) everywhere, maybe it's the same with the yarn. There is one german online shop which sells knit picks yarn, but just a few skeins of some sorts (and not what I'm looking for: Wool of the Andes - bad luck!). It's the same with ebay.
I even looked on ravelry, because some people sell their stashed yarn, but 7$ per skein which originally costs less than the half is pretty much.
But thanks none the less for your answer :-)

Having knit Rogue, and used Merino Style for other projects, I will offer my advice ( ... )

Merino Style is a DK weight yarn, and knit at the gauge needed for Rogue, it would be very loose and floppy.

Having actually knit several Rogues in Merino Style, this is not true.

Uh, maybe I'm misunderstanding your question, but if you just want to replace acrylics with natural fibers, what's wrong with Paton's "classic wool"? It's 100% wool. It pills a bit, but if you use a sweater shaver it's quite a good yarn. I use it for sweaters regularly.

Caveat: My own gauge was too large for my size on the first Rogue I made, so rather than seam it up and give it to someone else, I just put the pieces away and started a second one, which is knitting up beautifully. Both are made from Merino Style, which I've enjoyed working with on the project. Just make sure you get the gauge right and you shouldn't have any problems.

Hehe :) Yes, as far as KP yarns and Rogues go, I've made ... either 2 or 3 with Merino Style, one with Swish Superwash, and one with Wool of the Andes. All three yarns worked quite well, though there will be some pilling with all three at first.

Merino Style is my favorite though, followed closely by the Swish, depending on whether the recipient is likely to chuck it in the laundry without thinking.
