It was bound to happen eventually

This evening, when I got home from work, I took off my shoes and discovered a hole in my hand-knit sock. It looks like one strand broke, and it has started to unravel a little in each direction. I'll try to fix it with a crochet hook. This is my first hole in a hand-knit sock. I am very sad.

We've got carpet beetles or some other damn thing, so I'm kind of used to pulling something out of the hall closet for the first time in winter and discovered little holes that weren't there when I put it up last spring -- but I admit the real topper was when I finished a pair of thick striped kneesocks in the spring and pulled them out for our first cold snap in late October and discovered a big hole near the top of one. (I managed to repair it so you could barely tell -- thankfully it was in the striped region rather than in the stranded colorwork band, or worse yet the ribbing -- but it pissed me off to find a chunk the size of a half-dollar missing from a completely unworn pair of socks.) So this is why nowadays my socks live in a big metal canister that original held holiday popcorn, and my sockyarn in a big plastic bin under the bed, and I make a point of sticking bins and canister alike out on the back patio every winter during a good cold snap.

I'm sorry to hear about the hole in your sock. I wanted to say "happy birthday" a few days early so I didn't miss it.
