So then

I'm slowly moving my office from Meliora to Lattimore. Let this stand as my official announcement. It is not a political (in the bad sense of the word) move. Ask me more about it if you want to, but basically I'm going to be doing more work with Joyce in the future than I have in the past. Interestingly, I'll be doing more work with Dick in the ( Read more... )

no security word for me
i went to an after-school program when i was really young...and after that i just walked home by myself from 3rd or 4th grade on...my mom called us "latch-key" kids...my school was a straight shot, about 10 minute walk from my house-

i know it's not political move...but still a little sad to me- :(
do i still qualify for meals on neils once in a while?? hehe
oh by the way, i owe you a tupperware- don't ask...

No piano tuners come to mind... I think they were sighted? We did have a piano tuned once.

Er, someone I didn't know picking me up from school? Er... I can't remember that actually happening. Of course, I usually took the bus. I do remember vaguely that some password was actually the name of a friend of mine, but I've totally forgotten what it was for or which friend.

This situation... I'm not sure if hugging is a euphemism or not. Depends on how uptight people are...

Congratulations on getting to see the sun! I must admit that B&L is pretty much in the middle between Meliora and Lattimore, so it doesn't seem like you've gone farther away. But Lattimore is unfamiliar territory. I'll wave when I walk past to go to orchestra in Strong.

You crazy kids & your ability to walk to/from school! Urban youth! Little Lebowski urban achiever!

And of course you'll qualify for MoN. It's been a while since I've done that.

oh by the way, i owe you a tupperware- don't ask...
By returning it, you're thwarting my plan to get rid of all of my house's tupperware slowly but surely. Curse you all!

i do not understand these questions. my family had an electric piano (no, not a keyboard, exactly, it was more of an electric piano.) the security word... makes no sense. A) i knew all of my parents' friends, B) if i didn't, how would they have recognized me as the child they were to pick up, C) if the assumption is that one of these family friends could secretly be a pedophile-kidnapper, wouldn't you really need a new security word each time? And if that were the case, how is that better than saying "Oh, Miss Karen is going to pick you up from school today" I would not have had a good enough memory for this nonsense anyhow. and then the third question... i dunno dude. either it's awkward to say hey let's meet up, or it's not. i think the most likely result is one of you will be like "hey we should meet up" and the other will say "yeah we should, call me if anything's happening" and then neither of you will call and you won't meet up. *shrugs*

But to me it always seemed like such a hypothetical/rare occurrence (maybe used once in my family's history) that it didn't seem like a big deal ( ... )

Did anybody else know a blind piano tuner as a child?

Never having played the piano, I can't say I did... but having gotten into jazz and enjoying listening to jazz bands play in parks during the summer, I came to know Eddie Clute (out of Watkins Glen), a blind piano player who has his own band, and apparently tunes pianos as well.

Random extra knowledge: he also tuned the music jukebox at the Seneca Lodge, and knows the ordering of the songs by heart.

When you were a kid, what was your parents' security word if somebody other than them was to pick you up from school?

Some great aunt something's middle name or something like that. I have literally no clue what it is now (both in the literal sense as well as the sitting in the present and looking back to the past sense).

You're person A. You have an acquaintance/friend person B, with whom you're not really on hugging terms. You live in location 1. You, person A, go to location 2 in a semi-distant city. You know person B will be there. You meet up. What ensues? Is it weird? ( ... )

I think I was partially aiming for the Corning-contingent on the tuner bit. My memory is of my 2nd grade classroom, Mrs. Roll having her piano tuned by a blind man.

How do you tune a jukebox?

Hey, I had Mrs. Roll as well in 2nd grade. Although I do not remember a piano all that well (perhaps because I did not get to witness it being tuned by a blind man).

And, perhaps "jukebox" was a poor word.. it was like one of those electronic pianos (only not a piano), where you have the roll of paper with the songs etched on it. The mechanics inside perhaps are that of the piano? I would have to guess considering the piano tuner I referenced had intimate knowledge of this particular machine due to having worked on it. Still in operation actually, if you ever wander to the Seneca Lodge (up on the hill, and almost overlooks Watkins Glen).. it is in the bar.

Yes, in fact, perhaps the same blind piano tuner you knew, given that we're both from Corning. Are you thinking of Stirling France?

When you were a kid, what was your parents' security word if somebody other than them was to pick you up from school?

We didn't have one. If I wasn't taking the bus, things were pre-arranged.

We probably meet at a restaurant and talk over dinner. This happens to me periodically, and no, it's not weird.

Maybe? Maybe there are two blind piano tuners in the Corning area...

My understanding of it, as a child & now, is that it was for emergency use.

See my edit to this post for added bits on the A/B 1/2 thoughts.
