So then

I'm slowly moving my office from Meliora to Lattimore. Let this stand as my official announcement. It is not a political (in the bad sense of the word) move. Ask me more about it if you want to, but basically I'm going to be doing more work with Joyce in the future than I have in the past. Interestingly, I'll be doing more work with Dick in the ( Read more... )

I have never known a piano tuner at all, let alone a blind one. When I was a child.

There may have been a security word but I'm not sure, I really don't remember there being one. Now I may have ask my mom. I don't remember being picked up by anyone who wasn't a very familiar family friend who I would assume my parents trusted.

You're person A. You have an acquaintance/friend person B, with whom you're not really on hugging terms. You live in location 1. You, person A, go to location 2 in a semi-distant city. You know person B will be there. You meet up. What ensues? Is it weird? How often does this situation occur to you?

I think the answer to the third one is very situation specific. Either that or I haven't had this experience often enough to generalize. I could tell you what has ensued when I've seen different friends from college since graduating, but I I'm pretty sure I was on hugging terms with all of them before we left.

I don't understand the concept of "not really on hugging terms" unless one party is shomer negiah, in which case you smile and wave.

I have a great deal of respect for your maintaining security within your family... at least when it comes to picking you up from school.

Right, right. I had to look up shomer negiah. Oh, Gella, you teach me so much!

* Our piano tuner was blind.

* Yes, I had a security word, but I certainly can't tell it to strangers.

* You're moving to Lattimore, too??? I guess putting students on different floors was such a great idea that now they're putting us in different floors AND different buildings? I mean, where the hell is LATTIMORE anyway? (Yes, I've been here long enough I actually do know...)

you should have been there (actually, maybe you were) when kyle c criticized my use of an emoticon on a talk slide, and mike and dick were like, what? what nonsense is that? i think dick has since learned.

i am tired of crying my eyes out because i can't figure out how to elegantly do 8 million t tests in r. fucking idiot narcissist masochist programmers. they are the anton weberns of the academic world.

i'm going home.
