Thoughts On SCIFICTION

As a number of my friends aren't as "tuned in" to the speculative fiction scene as I am, I figure I should note the fact that the SciFi Channel's online publishing arm, SCIFICTION, is closing down. After some consideration, I think what bothers me the most is that they didn't even bother to try rethinking the business model -- cut down on pay rate, charge for content -- in order to make it more commercially viable. They just axed it completely. And that's what has me upset.

That makes me very sad.

I was planning on sending them stuff, as soon as I had actual SF-ish short fiction worth submitting.

A pity indeed.

Though Ellen herself has said that the archives will be around for a year, happily. Let's hope that doesn't change.

That sucks hard. I almost had something accepted there, once. Those folks I know who have worked with them had nothing but good things to say.
