You know you have a geeky friend who would be willing to go shopping with you to help advise. If he doesn't own it and I like it you have a good chance. :)
Dad was impossible to get stuff for too, so I started getting things for him that I wanted him to have around the house: cable TV and paid for it for years, VCR (this in the 1980s), oh, and one year a fire extinguisher. "why did you get me this?" he asked, "because I want one in the house". He needed a NEW chainsaw, but wouldn't let us buy one, I should have gone and done that anyway, though he seemed content with the the 7 old ones, two worked, five didn't (five red, two yellow).....Hey, is there anything that he's sort of is limping along with, maybe you could replace it. Good luck. Let us know (after wards) what you got him....
