I just took a walk around the property to check on the mountain laurels.  Many of them are hugely in bud, and the ones that aren't in bud are hugely in new leaves.  I've got pictures of that later.  First though, I want to show you the lawn.  Trolling through my photo files, I found this picture taken June 19 of last year - almost exactly a year

Gotta love hyperseeding. Dad of course, had to comment "yeah - until it dies in a month from lack of sun." I'm not so sure about that though, because we got the heavy shade variety. All we can do is wait and see. Regardless - I'm delighted.

Not all varieties of grass will survive in shade but if you got a shade mix it'll be fine. Basically, if you planted it in a shady area and it grew, it will continue to do so. If it weren't able to handle shade the seed wouldn't have come up properly to begin. So if anything does happen to it it's very unlikely to be about the amount of sun its getting.

Looks nice and private. That's something our place is missing. It's about 4 acres so it's big but it doesn't really feel private anywhere. This is a busy property.

That's pretty much what I figured. There are some areas that I *know* it's not going to grow, between a combination of deep, deep shade and foot traffic - so I'm not even going to try. Along the east side of the garage it gets no sun at all, and the moss is probably a half an inch thick. That works. It's green, and it keeps the soil in place. There is a similar lack of light on the other side of the deck, and a lot of traffic along the front of the garden. Eventually I'll put flagstones in. Done.

At the moment it is *incredibly* private. It's only just shy of an acre, but you'd never know. The previous owners planted evergreens between us and the neighbors, so you can't even see them. At least until the wooly adelgids kill them. Who knows - maybe they'll hold out until the DEP finds a biological control.

The next big thing I want to do out there is build an arbor under the creeping hydrangea at the end of the deck. The old tree trunk it's growing on is all but gone, and it's too damn pretty to let it go "thud" in some
