In the back of my mind is a joke from WKRP In Cincinnati that has someone asking that question, setting up Les Nessman to respond with something like “The last time I ate at a New Mexican restaurant I was in Albuquerque.”

We just got back from a 2-week+ trip to the southwest, including Albuquerque (among many other stops). We were there for the annual Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, but checked out some other things. On the recommendations of friends, we visited -- and we recommend -- two dining venues:

(1) EL PINTO RESTAURANT -- one of the largest restaurants you'll ever see. They had the best food we encountered during the entire trip. If you go to ABQ, definitely stop here. www.elpinto.com

(2) THE OWL CAFE -- Oldtime Route 66 style diner. "How ya doin, hun?" waitresses and no-nonsense menu. Fun for people-watching and tasty food.

Have fun!

...and upon re-reading your entry, I see the word moving which my early-morning eyes read as visiting. Hmmph. Well, still, if you go out that way, try eating at those places.

Well, we're probably years from moving, but I expect we'll visit Albuquerque in February or March, so the restaurant tips are greatly appreciated.

I love Albuquerque. There's a B&B there on a ridge just outside town. From your window you can look down on the "bowl" of lights that makes the city. I think that because you are from a city and not a small town, you would prefer Alby to T&C. It's very civilized and has all the stores/restaurants and tourist stuff, PLUS luminarias and festivals. What could anyone want? I think you'd be a natural there. But I love the Southwest, so may be biased.
