1...2...3...THREE LINKS, HA HA HA

Ok, I haven't done a link entry in a long time, so here goes:

First off, the story on the Tube-Voice-Lady (that's what I call her, her real name is Emma Clarke and you can hear her saying such choice phrases as MIND THE GAP) is brilliant. Sorry, but just read it! She basically wrote some, um, choice opinions on her blog and TfL took offence, ( Read more... )

books, news, linkies

Didn't TfL miss every performance target set for them this year?

And I see it's alright for them to employ humour with their response. Over reacting pompous buffoons. I suspect they may get a few irate emails flying their way.

No idea, but unsurprising if they did. They suck.

I always thought Oscar the grouch was training for kids to get used to dealing with assholes later in life?

As a kid though, I couldn't escape the feeling that maybe "Snuffalupagus" was Spanish or something for dicknose. :)

Freedom of speech doesn't mean giving someone a platform from which to speak, though.

True, and I'm not sure why Oxford would invite (or let) such people speak there other than to, perhaps, push a strong point or something? I dunno.

To be honest, imo, you put either of those two up anywhere and let them talk and it'll be a beautiful demonstration on how sodding foolish they are and what kind of 'historian' NOT to be, in Irving's case. I suspect Oxford's agenda, however, didn't include their being there to ridicule, mind you.

I don't mind Nick Griffin and David Irvine being given a platform from which to speak.

So long as it's a very slippery one that the Eurostar goes through at 100mph.

Will Winnie the Pooh be next for the chop? He eats honey all day and Eeyore is a right miserable bastard!

Winnie the Pooh will develop some form of insulin resistance and have to swear off the honey and Eeyore will be on antidepressants. Christopher Robin will be treated for delusional behaviour cause he talks to animals.

However Kanga and Roo will be considered exemplars of the positive effects of Attached Parenting.

Wol will be castigated for not using sufficiently accessible vocabulary, so will lose his Arts Council funding.

Dr Julian Lewis summed up my opinion quite succinctly. There is a difference between freedom of speech and being able to say what you like - particularly when it incites hatred - on a privileged platform. The Oxford Union truly sucks balls for thinking it has any business providing one. Students can be the most arrogant tossers in the world.

I like this quote ""Nothing which happens in Monday's debate can possibly offset the boost you are giving to a couple of scoundrels who can put up with anything except being ignored," he said."
