I do love the Anglo Saxons, but they were going nowhere fastWell, but for the fact of having the most sophisticated state in Europe, a strong economy, and a brilliant literate and artistic culture. William of Normandy would very probably have lost at Hastings if Harold Godwineson hadn't just had to beat the most capable warrior in Europe, i.e. Harald Hardrada a week beforehand at Stamford Bridge

I was thinking more culturally - what with having almost no literary culture to speak of, not much of an urban culture - and, you know...they hadn't even gotten their heads around the whole 'CASTLE' idea and were still using hut type things (I mean, Heorot sounds cool, but the castles were way cooler ;)), and didn't even have cities (or a word for 'city', they just had ceastre (sp?)) - in comparison to somewhere like Byzantium - and of course the rest of Europe had more connection with places like that - it was a bit lacklustre, culturally. And hm - I think there is a teeny bit more Old French/Norman lit pre-1066, but not much. At least there's a slightly larger amount of langue d'oil lit (that has survived) - Chanson de Roland, the life of Saint Eulalie and a few others, also what about the Carolingian Renaissance? It's a bit hard to separate Normandy from the rest of France (or what was 'France' at the time), esp considering the French king was the Norman liege lord. And the Anglo-Norman stuff produced for awhile after 1066 is

I think trying to apply logical analysis to the words of Nick Griffin is something of a losing game along the lines of staring into the abyss until you find it stares back at you.
The man is a complete f**knut, both racist and stupid, and came over very badly on QT. I loved the way he tried to make out that european laws prevented him explaining his previous holocaust denial and why he changed his mind.
I think it was right to let him on though. He's an elected MEP and that needs to be respected otherwise we lower ourselves to his level.
Well, they were banging on about Jan Moir being 'allowed' to publish her gay-bashing bullshit article and...it's the same topic re: Griffin, surely? I mean, free speech is not only for when you hear what you want to hear, it's also about hearing the stuff you don't agree with. And the stupid guy is an MEP, so he has every right and we'd do ourselves a great disservice to refuse him the seat. I mean, he did such a WONDERFUL job of showing what a totally ignorant fuckstick he is! No one could have done a better job tearing him down - watching him try to worm out of taking responsiblity for his own statements, throwing ad hominem attacks around, using arguments so specious a six year old would probably forgo 'going there' and generally acting like a whiny little tosser (oh, people are being MEAN to me - dude, you pretty much advocate beating up brown skinned shop owners and *you're* complaining about people being mean to you? Shut up.), blaming EVERYTHING on everyone else - HA. It was comedy gold. "I was never convicted of
