I tried to watch it from the beginning, but i can no longer take it. What's the draw with award shows?

I have no idea. I never watch them. I'm sure it's interesting for actors or people rooting for "their guy", but I don't know how people outside that community can find such an incestuous event even slightly entertaining.

I do not believe these two concepts are to be used in the same sentence by any rational, educated person.

Your confusion is justified.

It's an ego stroke.
It's politics for actors.
Oh, and Fancy-dress Cleavage.

I think the common folk watch them in hopes to see some accidental thing that gets recorded on live tv. However, I'm betting the Oscars aren't even live.
I remember as a teenager I LOVED the MTV awards. I'd change my plans around to make sure I could stay up and watch them. But that was to see live music. Now...I could care less.

If you wanted to be part of the industry, you'd probably find awards meaningful. If you had friends who talked a lot about either the art or the politics of filmmaking, and did so with a dash of charisma, then the ceremony could practically be part of your crowd. I sat through a lot of Oscar talk last Monday because that's what the most vocal person at work wanted to talk about ... and if we'd been one-on-one, with me able to ask questions and explore topics, I might've become genuinely interested in the discussion ( ... )
