I've heard that a way to reduce FUTURE clutter -- one that I've used with great success -- is to only handle things once. When you bring in the mail, act on it immediately, throwing away the junk mail, opening any packages and putting them away, paying the bills, going over the bank statements, filing whatever needs to be filed. Mail can certainly accumulate if one just puts it aside for "later", until it becomes an intimidating pile of mostly junk mail, which unfortunately must be sorted through to get to the important stuff.

Also, when a job seems overwhelming, I tend to work my way around the periphery of the room. I start to the right of the doorway and deal with it in as small or large an increment as I can handle at that particular time. This can apply to cleaning, clearing clutter, or painting.

It might be fun not to tell Giddyup about the cd, and just play it as random background music when he's there. Heehee...

i've never managed that handling things only once, but perhaps i ought to try it. the periphery thing is a good tip. i can combine it with the 15-minute method. i set the alarm clock for 15-minute increments, which also makes it more manageable. and in this method, every fourth 15, i get to take a little break! it seems to work pretty well for me. it's much easier to take it in little chunks, and the incentive of getting to take a breather cannot be overestimated. :D

hee. i could have it playing when he arrives - he usually takes a cab from the airport since i don't have a car.
