Sorry to hear about that.. I guess it is standard practice for some places, and if it's a medical job I guess they want to know you won't be stealing stuff out of the sharps containers, but the "big brother" point is a very valid one. Kudos on sticking up for your beliefs, even if it costs you the opportunity.

Would it be wise to contact whoever approved you for the job (up til the screening thing) and explain your predicament? They may still assume you're a stoner for not giving the sample, but it could be worth a shot.

I'm going to write a letter to them yes. Maybe they'll reconsider, who knows? I do know that finding the right person for that job was pretty tough, considering that one would have to do minor surgery on cadavers. That creeps most people out.

Even if I did smoke pot every night of the week, that is my business on my own time and it wouldn't affect my work performance.

You exercised your right to not go to work for a company whose policies you disagree with. I hope you are able to find work in a place that doesn't mind if you do drugs or not. It shouldn't be too difficult out there on the west coast if you could find like a cancer clinic with progressive values that advocates for patients being allowed to grow their own weed or something.

That being said, I'm glad the law allows employers to do this. The color of one's uniform (or whether or not one wears a uniform at all) has no bearing on one's job performance either. I still think private employers should be allowed to establish a dress code and enforce a culture in the workplace as they see fit.

Similarly, it has no affect on one's job performance if they moonlight as a sex worker. I still think a restaurant should be allowed to decide to not hire strippers and prostitutes to serve its customers.

Just wondering: if someone moonlights as a sex worker, would you hire them at your restaurant?

Yes. Because I'd also own the strip club that she moonlights at. :)

Good for you for standing up for yourself if you don't agree with their policies. Sucks to lose the job though ( ... )

Well, it can detect marijuana pretty easily, due to the fact that it stays in the tissues (namely fat) for 5 weeks or longer, depending on metabolism. Drugs like cocaine and opiates don't stick around the body for that long, but these tests can detect opiate drugs and a lot more. I used to take narcotics for chronic pain, and I have also smoked in the last month for some chronic pain I had been having before my surgery. That's the thing that kills me here...I'm no drug addict (I don't even drink!), yet these tests would say that, essentially. I'm not going to subject myself to that.

Yeah...that is so unfortunate. Basically the tests give answers without context. So they basically say you're a stoner or you're not, which isn't true. I've had times when I've definitely thought about using marijuana for my nausea, as it was recommended by some friends that work in the medical field. I've never used it because I've always been panicked that someone would find out (namely an employer) and think I'm a huge stoner. Makes me sad to think that I'd rather deal with the incredible nausea and inability to eat instead of the potentially wrong assumption about me.

Again..I'm sorry this happened. I know you really were looking forward to this job.

Thanks, I appreciate that.
Oh, and I still want to use you as a patient before May 15th if possible!
