Gender neutral pronouns make me twitch. They *shouldn't*, because I think that gender specific pronouns are ridiculous and boxy, but old habits are hard to break.
I don't know if it applies, but in agile software development the trainers often say "If you're not uncomfortable, then you're not doing something right. You should be uncomfortable because that means you're growing and challenging yourself."
Every noun is gendered in German, (except for a few that aren't, of course).
I like the ones used for a character (a felinoid "Hermat") in the Star Trek "New Frontier" books. They use "hir" and... I forget. But it's smooth(er) and worth looking up.
I wouldn't worry about it. Online, who knows? More importantly, you shouldn't care. Maybe they were a potential ax murderer and you're better off. Maybe not, but the point is they're now just someone you didn't meet. There are billions of other people you won't meet, too.
I've been brushed off much like that online (by females from personals) and I've been dismissed and told why. Frankly, I'd *much* rather be brushed off without explanation. Maybe that's just me, but no matter how rational or reasonable the reason, being told always stings at least a little. When they just go away, I don't know, but I don't really much care, either. I have adopted that too, so when someone drops me a line from personals and I'm not interested, I just hit delete.
It really is just easier and cleaner that way, at least for me and I suspect for most people, if the truth be known, even if they say otherwise.
Kinda sounds like someone ws "fishing" and once he had to "walk the talk" backed out. Granted its rude not to give a reason. But some folks don't like conflict even if it isn't there.
