Nanowrimo: day 12

If I hear ANYONE say the words "People shouldn't try so hard to be offended", or any variation thereof, ONCE more, I shall have to slap a bitch, as I believe the vernacular goes. This is due to a severe case of Not Getting It over this issue. I don't even watch the show but the only person I don't want to bitch slap is nightcamedown. Anyone who says "It's ( Read more... )

And a step down from THAT is "I'm sorry you were offended," a specialty of American politicians (implying that you are a sensitive, whiny-ass baby. For those of us who were alive during the '70s, it's weird that we've gone from trying to care (however maladroitly) about everyone to deciding that there are some people it's never OK to be offensive about, and others who it's simply too much fun to make fun of (overweight people, effeminate men, people with physical and mental disabilities).

On the other hand: Turkish Robau? Yum. May I ask why you have Turkish Trek subtitled in German?

I just hate all these excuses.

There should be a Rule No. 1 For Intelligent Discourse: Your Squee Does Not Matter. OK, so you like able-bodied Actor X playing Character Y, who uses a wheelchair. But that doesn't mean you have any sort of decent argument against the people who would have preferred it if disabled actor Z got the part. The casting directors of the show do not need defending; once more, they've gone the easy "Let's make sure, as far as is possible, everyone we cast is straight and able-bodied" route.

And I just noticed that someone there wrote: It should be completely acceptable for an uninjured person to play an injured person. Oh honey. In a perfect world, perhaps, which we do not live in, where there's more than a one wheelchair per show/movie maximum, where the "kill or cure" plot isn't in common use, where restaurants don't decide to put a zillion steps at the entrance, where it isn't necessary to be able to drive to get to a lot of places... maybe then, and it'd still be an issue ( ... )
