Room 303; Sunday Evening

Jun 11, 2006 20:47

The first thing Alphonse did upon entering his room was plop his suitcase in the middle of the floor and fall right into his bed. It had been an eventful weekend and equally exhausting ride back to Fandom, but hey, he made it.

He had to admit, it was good to be back.

[ ooc: ZOMG I (AND AL) RETURN. I had one -hell- of a weekend, if you're ( Read more... )

Pippi tried the door and was pleased to find it open.

Slowly she opened the door and was greeted with the sight of Al unpacking.

"Oh! Al! ... I didn't think there was anybody in here." she said truthfully.

"You were asleep for four years?"

"Ah, no, that was just a comparison. I just mean there's four years that I have no memory of, but according to others I was very much so up and around and doing things." Alphonse stood and rubbed at the back of his neck; it always felt kind of akward revealing about his memory lapse. In fact, he was wondering what was compelling him to say anything at all. "So... it's kind of like amnesia, just through alchemical means."

"Wow." she said, "Sucky. What did they say you were doing?"

"Trying to find a way to create the Philosopher's Stone," he answered. "We did eventually, but I don't remember how it's made and my Ed isn't around to say how. So I'm helping Ed here to find out."

"What does it do?" she asked, "The Philosopher's Stone."

"Being a science, alchemy has to follow its laws and cannot go against anything by nature," he started. "But with the Philosopher's Stone, it's possible to bend those laws to your need or ignore them completely; like creating an entire house out of only a few planks of wood. We needed that because the price to pay for the transmutation we wanted to perform was so huge that neither one of us had what it took for the exchange."

"If it was so expensive, couldn't you save up?"

Alphonse looked at her oddly before he started to laugh. "No, no, I don't mean with money," he said with a grin. "In order to gain something, you have to loose something in the process. It's called equivalent exchange back home. Alchemy cannot create anything out of nothing-- you need to give something up to get something new."

"We've guessed my memory, for one. But the rest... nobody really knows. My brother's been gone since." Alphonse let out a slightly frustrated breath; he really hated not being able anything that had happened. "I just hope he didn't decide to sacrifice himself in order to do it."

It dawned upon Alphonse that he was spilling more than he originally intended too-- he was pretty good with keeping his issues to himself, and Pippi wasn't someone he ever expected to talk about this to; so why the heck was he saying this now? He kept telling himself, It wasn't much, nothing big-- "To restore us to our original bodies. The way we were before we tried transmuting our mother back to life."

Almost immidiately he threw his hands up to cover his mouth. Oh, hell-- what made him say that?

"No," he answered softly. "That's why we failed. It's impossible to bring a person back from the dead. The transmutation rebounded on us."

Pippi sat down next to Al and put her arm around his shoulders.

"I'm sorry Al." She said, "You certainly can't be blamed for wanting to try. Boy, there's your compelling argument against Alchemy being magic... I didn't mean to say that last bit."
