Kangin sighed and rubbed his eyes for a moment as he tried to wrap his mind around what he'd just been told. He wouldn't have believed it, would have chalked it up to Heechul's idea of a really bad joke, except that the evidence was kind of hard to deny. He opened his eyes to stare again at the pair of angels and four humans that had invaded his head quarters while he'd been away on business.
One of the angels stood stoic, staring at him with a disdainful look while the other hovered anxiously, attention torn between the explanation gathering Kangin had insisted on and something outside the room. Somewhere, there was apparently a third angel isolated away with Changmin.
The humans all looked more curious than afraid, but that didn't really surprise him. Humans weren't exactly the brightest crayons in the box. The one looked like he'd been drugged, but Kangin supposed that was fair since he'd apparently gotten quite a dose of angel juice.
His demons were gathered around the fringes, more than one eyeing the humans with poorly disguised hunger of various sorts.
Why had he thought leaving Heechul in charge was a good idea?
“Okay.... Let me see if I've got this right.” He paused and tried to remember the proper order for the chaos his lieutenants had brought on them. “Somehow the angels found out one of their own was slumming it and ripped him up. Then he came here, half dead, looking for Changmin.”
A round of nods.
“So when another pair of angels showed up, you thought it was a good idea to let them waltz into camp and do whatever they wanted?”
“We have names, you know. And we were trying to help!” The littlest of the angels quelled slightly under the force of Kangin's attention, but huffed despite that with a muttered 'we were'.
The demon leader could appreciate a little back bone. “And those names would be?”
“Ryeowook.” There was a pause and then Ryeowook elbowed the other angel sharply.
With a sigh, he answered looking very put upon. “Yesung.”
“Right. So Ryeowook and Yesung show up to help, but since they need a doctor sort, you went to find your vet and came back with him and three other humans.”
All demons were loners with authority issues by nature. It was why they seldom settled into these sorts of groups without massive amounts of bloodshed and why no one with any kind of sense thought that an army of demons was a good way to conquer much of anything. Heechul was worse than most, though. He wore his insolence like a badge of honor. More than once, Kangin had wondered why the red-head had joined them, but he'd never really wanted to voice the question.
Heechul rolled his eyes. “I would have just killed them, but I don't think Hankyung would have agreed to come.”
The trio of coherent humans suddenly looked a little more nervous at his response. One even glanced over his shoulder at the demons standing behind him. Jaejoong let his eyes trail down the human's body hungrily before looking back up to meet his eyes with a smirk.
The startled noise and jump nearly sent all four humans toppling into Kangin and he sighed again. “Jaejoong, stop messing with them.”
There was no apology in the cheeky grin Jaejoong offered, but at least he settled back down and stopped eying the humans up like food.
Until he'd sorted everything out and decided what to do, Kangin would rather no one ended up appetizers.
“Right,” Kangin rolled his eyes and returned to the topic at hand. “so you bring the humans to camp and he helps you put the angel back together.” He waited for confirmation before glancing back at Ryeowook. “I don't suppose anyone thought to warn him what he was getting himself into?”
The angel had the grace to look guilty as he mumbled in response. “I told him it would sting.”
“Sting?” He couldn't help but gape a little of that before shaking his head. “I always heard angels had the gift of understatement.”
The energies that made up an angel's life force was an addictive enough drug in small doses of contact - it was what had made Changmin the object of much good-natured envy. To have essentially held the live wire in his hands... Kangin couldn't even imagine it. Certainly he didn't know many demons who would have walked away from it. The human was more or less in one-piece, just drugged out of his mind. Maybe they were made of sterner stuff than he'd ever given them credit for.
“He'll be okay,” Ryeowook said, his voice confident even if his eyes seemed troubled as he stared at the man in question. The mumbled 'probably' wasn't audible to human ears.
“And after all that, you still don't know if it worked because the angel still hasn't woken up. You may have just fried a human for no reason at all?” Kangin could feel a tension headache building in the back of his skull. He sighed before glancing between Heechul and Ryeowook. “Do we at least know if there are more, less... helpful angels coming?”
Ryeowook bit his lip and shrugged. “It's possible.”
“Possible? You can't do better than that? Where's that vaunted all confident knowledge angels are so famous for?”
This time, Yesung stepped in, his gaze chilly. “A week ago, we would have been confident that none of our brothers would be sleeping with a demon. Five days ago, we would have been confident that none of our brothers would even consider harming another. I think you can understand that our confidence in what Siwon may or may not do is a little shaky right now.”
“Siwon?”
To Kangin's eyes, Heechul actually looked stricken - something he'd never seen before. “You know him?”
Heechul swallowed, his face abnormally pale. “Unless there are two angels running around named Siwon, yeah.”
“No two angels share a name,” Ryeowook replied, curious. “How do you know him?”
There was a bitter twist to the smile on Heechul's face. “Let's just say he has no room to be casting stones for slumming it with demons.”
