I'm pretty sure John watches Star Trek for tips. I can hear him and Rodney having discussions with one another that Teyla and Ronon don't get until they start watching the DVDs too: "Okay... this is like that society in the Archon episode. Only with more home-spun clothes and no Festival. But they have the advanced tech from the past...." "What, robot-linked consciousness?" "Well, there's somethin' hinky goin' on. You tell me."

*g* Exactly! And none of them think it's weird at all to be taking notes from an old television show. Whenever anyone looks at them funny they're all "Were you not paying attention to what happened on that last mission?" and "Remember when that thing..." and just, yes. :D
