I'm be the first to admit that, in the midst of my hellish years post-failing-out-of-GA-Tech, I seriously considered joining the armed forces --ostensibly to get the whole Pay-For-Your-College-Education thing, but really just to get out of the house.

However, it's articles like this one (link to full text) that constantly remind me why I should ( Read more... )

I almost joined the Air Force before college. Was planning on going in through OCS so I'd be all "Officer and a Gentleman" styles. One time, while talking to the recruiter for a bit, he asked me why I wanted to join the Air Force. I told him it seemed interesting: You get to go all over the world, let's be real if you're on the ground you're just there to soak up bullets and serve as way for us to find the bad guys, and I always wondered what it looked like when you hit a building with a 5000 lb. bomb.

The recruiter laughed and asked me why I really wanted to join. I think he got nervous when I smiled.

I have on the occasion been having the same fearful impulses today and some other days, it's worse when the job recruiting sites send you all the National Guard and Navy emails :(

"Army Strong" sounds like the slogan of a floor-washing detergent. "Got tough greasy stains? You need Killemall Liquid--it's ARMY STRONG!!!"

"Do something amazing" reminds me of Neil from The Young Ones.

Maybe now people in the Air Force will understand the pain improvisers suffer at parties and in office introductions.

"Oh, you're in the Air Force? Ooh! Do something amazing!"
