kalpurna made an amazing post about
why she loves Gerard Way, and I told her that I unironically love Brendon Urie so much I could keel over, and in the course of our conversation it was decided I should do a Brendon post. So I did. Here it is.
I spent the majority of writing this with
this video playing in the background. Just, you know, to give some insight into the creative process. Or whatever. (WARNING: Brent Content. I am not a Brent-hater, but the image of him playing is very disturbing to me because he's terribly awkward and has bizarre movements, so be warned.)
Also, here's a funny little snippet of a conversation with Sarah from February 2006, before I knew the wonder of the bandslash fandom:
I had never even seen a picture of PATD [before reading musicsecret]
and here's why
I like their music
you know, with the sounds?
and not the image?
and because they are nine years old
OH HOW THINGS CHANGE, Y'ALL. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. And then literally a few days later I'm sending her an email about the video for "I Write Sins" and squealing about eyeliner. WHATEVER.
So, here they are,
The Top Six Reasons I Love Brendon Urie So Much I Could Pass Out:
♥ music ♥
Okay, I know most of you have heard this story about a thousand times, but this is really where it all begins. One of my flisters saw me talking about how much I love Fall Out Boy and said, "Hey, if you love FOB you should hear this new band called Panic! at the Disco." So I downloaded "Lying..." because I loved that title the most, and after listening that was it. I was done and in love and oh GOD, his voice. So I burned just that song to a disc and took it to lunch and made Sarah listen by saying, "OHGOD, listen to the way this boy says fuck," and the rest is history. I went out and bought the CD and it's one my favorite CDs ever.
His voice just floors me. The first time I watched them perform "Tonight, Tonight" I almost cried, just because it's so beautiful and that song meant to much to me in high school and hearing it in his voice is just amazing. Plus, his cover of "Slow Motion" breaks me every time. I know there are a lot of comparisons to Patrick, and I can hear it, but there's something so much bigger there. Patrick is smooth and his voice hits me in the vag heart, but Brendon's voice slams me in the chest. I love it. Plus he plays nine thousand instruments and he's so talented.
♥ sincerity ♥
You know how there are those people that just love so much, with every single cell in their body, and you can just tell by the way they look at people that they love them so much. That's Brendon. You can tell, every time he looks at Ryan or Spencer or Jon or Zack or Alex from The Cab or whoever that he just fucking adores them, and I love that. I love that he is a card-carrying member of teamjonwalker and I love that he hangs all over them and is constantly in their personal space and more often than not and they never seem to mind. Because that's just how he is. I love that he took the time to thank the fans for his birthday package and that he makes goofy blog updates and signs autographs out of the bus window as they're driving away.
And here's where I might lose some of you, but you know that
interview he does with Jon, and they ask about Brent, and Brendon basically says that they kicked him out because he wasn't dedicated to the band and he wasn't talented enough? I love that interview, because yeah, you could interpret it as being douchetastic, but I don't. I think it's the most honest answer he could have given, and I think he said what he said because he wanted everyone to understand that it wasn't because of a fight or personal reasons or because of money, it was purely a musical decision. He and Spencer and Ryan did what they thought was best for the band, as a whole, because it's the most important thing in their lives, and instead of giving some bullshit answer or avoiding the question, he told the truth. Could he have worded it better? Sure. Of course. But that's the most honest moment I've ever seen with him and I fucking love it, and I love him for giving it to me.
(And now I'm just going to have to do a "why I love Panic! so much" post, because there's a lot I want to say about them and PR and all that jazz, but now is not the time.)
♥ tattoo ♥
If you do not love Brendon Urie's tattoo, you are dead to me. DEAD, I SAY. Okay, that's not true, but seriously. Seriously. How could you not love it? ONE, it's awesome and huge and I feel like it might be the first step in a sleeve tattoo and that would literally make me happier than anything he has ever done. TWO, the piano keys are coming out of his arm, y'all. The music is under his skin, in his blood. That's what he is, a walking, talking instrument. MY GOD, how can you not love that? He doesn't just think in music, he is music. GAH. LOVE.
♥ emotional wall ♥
Brendon has these walls, where you can just see him make the decision to stop being honest and stop taking an interview seriously, and the amazing thing about him is that you can literally see them go up sometimes. Like in
the antour video, when the girl tells them about people thinking Placebo are gay because of the makeup, and then she asks them if they're gay because of their makeup and stage show, BAM! Wall. And then he tells her that's the stupidest thing he's ever heard. LOVE.
Or the
interview with the PopWorld girl, where she thinks it's just brilliant to admit to someone who got hit with a bottle at Reading and got knocked out, that she threw a bottle of piss at someone? BAM! Wall. Also, he looks at her like he thinks she's the biggest fucking asshole in the world, and I LOVE THAT. I LOVE IT. Because, seriously. HE GOT KNOCKED OUT BY A BOTTLE. Why would you tell him that story? Oh, right, because she's a asshole. The rest of the video is painful to watch, except for the moments where he and Jon giggle at each other.
(Also, as a side note, Jon Walker looks like he wants to punch her in the throat, and I love that, too.)
Basically, if you're someone that he loves and respects, what you think of him means everything to him, but otherwise? He doesn't give a fuck and I love that.
♥ religion ♥
Oh, religion. This is where I start to identify with him in serious ways, because I was raised Catholic, and let me tell you something. Coming out at eighteen to your very Catholic parents, and making the decision to leave the Church? The single hardest thing I have ever had to do.
In the
interview Brendon did with PopIcon, he talks about telling his parents that instead of doing his mission, he was going to do the band, and he talks about how tough it was telling them that music was his religion, not LDS. He worked at a Smoothie Hut and found what I'm sure was a shithole apartment and devoted everything he had to the band and he was, what? Eighteen. That's amazing. To have the courage to stand up to your very strict, very religious parents and say, "I know what you believe, but this is what I believe and I have to follow my own path" is incredibly difficult. It's really hard to figure out what it is that you actually believe after spending your entire life being told that this one way of thinking is the only true way. I admire him so much for this, and for being true to himself despite the fact that his parents were completely unsupportive.
♥ the fun stuff ♥
Okay, I think that's enough serious shit for one entry. He loves Capri Suns! He eats candy non-stop! He gets excited like a tiny monkey child and makes ridiculous faces and giggles at everything and is just so happy to be sometimes I can't stand it! He wears pastel hoodies! He wears fake mustaches and top hats and cocks his hip in very gay ways! HE IS SO GAY I CANNOT STAND IT! (Like, seriously, SO GAY. If he's not at least canonically bisexual I will eat Patrick Stump's hat.) He sings random songs about nothing and laughs his ass off at Jon Walker and my God, his smile is amazing. He's very clever and he's a complete dorkass on stage and he had the Aladdin soundtrack on his iPod and sang it with Jon Walker the day they met and he shows people his ass crack. You know that little kid from the Disney commercial, the one who's "too excited to sleeeeeeeeeep"??? That is what I imagine Brendon was like as a tiny child, adorable and excited and hyper and OMG. PLUS HE IS GORRRRRRGEOUS and whatever, I am sometimes very shallow. But, GOD, he's beautiful.
He's amazing. He fucking loves his life and he loves his band and he loves his family and I love him. I LOVE HIM.
And because I love him and I am, in my heart, an emo bitch, I made him a
