Just for the record, I hated Navy Pier when I was in Chicago not too long ago. Tourist trappy and the shopping was terrible.

Hearty Boys *what kind of food? is it pricey?*
Navy Pier
Used book store
Lots of coffee!
*Remember that you will be in Minnesota for several days where there is NO SALES TAX on clothes! Plus, you have a friend who also needs cute (non-pastel) spring clothes!*
I can't wait to see you Kate...please keep in mind that I have been extremely healthy this winter and have not had the benefits of a stomach alien to help me lose weight :). That is me being insensitive to your health issues...or looking on the bright side?

used book stores -- definitely!
Hearty Boys -- all I tend to eat are their brownies :) it's just a little storefront, and has different foods every day. I usually just stop in and chat with my caterers, and grab a snack.

OOH right! Shopping for clothes in MN would be good, too! As long as we go earlyish so I'll have something to wear come ACPA :) am hoping any clothes shopping I do in Chicago is paid for by the mom anyway...

I'm pretty sure my stomach alien is non-contagious, and I gained plenty of weight with the move and the stress of new places, just like you may have done, so yeah. Blah. Still not at the weight I was in Grinnell, but more importantly, I just don't feel that healthy, weight-wise. We'll have to go on nice walks around lakes and stuff :) I will bring a hat so I don't get the headaches I usually get from walking outside in cold.

Hi kismet09! I saw you had friended me and I thought I'd stop by and say hi! I'm guessing you know I'm voiceofreason from nervousness but if not, well, I am. I got your fabric and yarn the other day, and I wondered whether it would be OK if I used both fabrics in the scrabble book cover or if you would rather only one. And I'm asking over here instead of in nervousness just because.

IKEA rocks my socks. I need to go there again sometime soon.

Navy Pier is not worth is unless you are under 10 years old, or something good is playing at the IMAX theater there. I saw Fantasia 2000 at the IMAX there, and that is all I can say that is good about Navy Pier. The food and shopping is expensive, and it's nothing that you can't get anywhere else. But, I also believe that you must experience things for yourself. That's just my humble opinion of it.

yeah, I know it probably isn't so exciting, but it's still kinda fascinating to me because it was just a pier while I was growing up (I lived in chicago from 76, when I was born, til 94, when I left for college), and now it's this big touristy deal - so it would be more of a sociological observation than an actual desire to be there.

That's cool. I am still in the Chicago area, and I remember Navy Pier becoming the touristy place that it is now. Oh, if I remember right, they have Dippin Dots there, which is also a good thing, but mostly on hot summer days.

There will be some good people-watching subjects there for you, too!

*jealous*

Don't forget that March in Chicago is not always accompanied by nice (read warm) weather. I have been jaded living in Merlin.

Navy Pier has never been exciting to me. Let me know if you find something interesting there.
My Favorite Coffeeshop [TM]: Intelligentsia on Broadway near Briar St. in Boystown. Sine qua non.
Make sure you don't go into the Virgin Megastore on Michigan. It's a death spiral into wallet nothingness. For me, anyway.
BUT! Go to the new(ish) Lego store on Michigan. Fun. :)
I've actually never eaten at Two Happiness. But the Malaysian (?) place across the street is amazing.

Have fun. :)

I have no idea how to prepare for all the weather permutations that can occur in these cities at the end of March. I've settled on layers and leaving extra room in my suitcase for buying suitable clothes.

I love Intelligentsia! Good drinks and cute people. Yum.
2nd Hand Tunes, Reckless Records and Dr. Wax are usually my budget downfalls when it comes to entertainment.
OOH! I've never been to the LEGO store! How fun!

Wasn't Dr. Wax what High Fidelity was based on? I've never been sure. I love those stores too, of course. Great way to lose cash.

Gino's East or Lou Malnati's..... bring me a frozen pizza?? I'll make it worth your while! :) :)

the record store in high fidelity is shot in what used to be Wax Trax, in (I think) its Wicker Park location on Damen

I'd bring a pizza if I was coming directly from Chicago, but alas, I'll be in Minneapolis/St Paul for a week after the Windy City, and I don't think a pizza would do well in my hotel room. You can order online though: Lou Malnati's and Gino's East. :)
