I've used cloth menstrual pads (http:/www.lunapads.com), and sea sponge tampons (http://www.jadeandpearl.com) for years. There is also the vaginal cup (http://www.divacup.com), and if you absolutely MUST use disposables the best and safest are Organic cotton ones that are not bleaches.(http://www.natracare.com/products/the_natural_choice.htm... )

The museum of mestruration is amazing and a plethora of information. You talk about how the media and the industry colors the perception of women's bodies. It reminds me of this old ad I found on mum once:

Lysol for douching. Good God.

Eeeeeeep!!! I never saw that one... it's great in that sick twisted holy sh*t kinda way.

I think my fav mum exzibits are:
http://www.mum.org/washpdit.htm
http://www.mum.org/NorwPads.htm
These pads from the 18th-19th centuries just really inspired me. I'm not sure I can accuretly explain why but it has something to do with feeling connected to the past.

Oh but I must also include this link related directly to the asbestos e-mail:

you would think that there are how many women in this country, and most of them get periods EVERY month.... they shouldn't have any reason to try to create a demand that's already huge.

Tampons aren't good - while this particular essay on the less than healthful qualitys of everyones insertable commodoty lacks a certain understanding of the issues at hand it does not unjustly slander the feminine hygene industry.

I wasn't discrediting the article, if that's what you're saying. I believe it.

I'm just shocked that they would go to such lengths for more money. I mean, really, they have a steady demand-- they don't need anymore money.

It's ridiculous to put things (abestos? good god) in the tampon to make (us, you, we, them) bleed more. It's not ridiculous, actually, it's completely disgusting and horrible. That was what shocked me most... I know they don't care if we get cervical cancer.
