Having sent Tina on her way, Bones was circling around checking on the others. Sickbay never closed, and the crew seemed poised to keep supplying them with fresh lacerations, broken bones, and dislocated shoulders.

But a vibration at his hip made Bones look up suddenly. Kirk's neurocortal monitor was registering changes in brain pattern, which in all likelihood meant-

Hurrying over there, he hurried around the corner to the private area where George and Kirk were being kept. He caught himself on the wall to slow his progress when he saw Kirk's eyes open. Taking a deep breath, he walked slowly toward him, the smile on his face as genuine as the worry in his eyes.

"Morning, Captain," he said, approaching the bed.

Kirk's eyes shifted, staring up silently at Bones. He swallowed, and then offered a very slight smile. Bones. The person who, unknowingly or not, was the person that had pulled him out of his own after-Nero funk by forcing Kirk to have to try and get Bones out of it as well.

The look in those eyes... no one had ever looked at him like that before.

It made his chest feel tight and warm.

He stepped closer to the bed, reached down and touched Kirk's shoulder. It was different now from last night, the lights brighter and the sounds of a busy sickbay behind him, but Bones remembered what they said to each other, even if Jim might not.

There were a hundred questions Dr McCoy needed to ask Captain Kirk regarding his medical condition, but he allowed himself a moment to be just Bones talking to Jim.

His voice was low, little hoarse. "I am so fucking glad to see you, Jim."

Kirk felt himself relax, just slightly, at those words. They were words he needed to hear badly. He looked down, then focused on getting his hand up - hey, finally responding - and reaching up to grasp weakly at Bones' shirt. There were a million questions Kirk wanted to ask in return, but his mind just wasn't entirely up to it. So he just hung on, for now, watching Bones' face.
