Modal Realism
"Last question," the prompter announced. "One thing you're grateful to your family for?"
With careful strokes, Tsuyoshi wrote: "Unconditionality".
Kouichi thought a bit, then wrote: "Doumoto".
Tsuyoshi looked at Kouichi's writing. "The name?"
"The name," said Kouichi.
"...That you're not born a
Tanaka or Yamada?"
Kouichi laughed. "Well, I mean, that's the reason we got paired up."
Tsuyoshi's amused smile was a little gentler than usual. "Who knows how Johnny-san's mind works, maybe Doumoto and Tanaka would still..."
"Like, if it's meant to be?"
"
Alternative universe, or something." Tsuyoshi looked at his own writing board. "Unconditional... events and such."
"It's all cause and effect," Kouichi said sagely. "Anyway, this is the one we've got."
"So... 'Doumoto' is just right."
"Just right," nodded Kouichi. "Therefore, I'm thankful."
"That's how it is," Tsuyoshi concluded.
"You haven't explained your answer," Kouichi pointed out.
"Haven't I? The story about alternative universes earlier..."
Kouichi laughed. "That's not what you mean, is it!"
"I'm sure the viewers know what I mean." Tsuyoshi nodded at the camera with a wide smile. "That's how it is."
The recording rolled to a stop on that playful sight, and the magazine photographer stepped in for his turn.
Kouichi leaned in by reflex when Tsuyoshi's arm circled his shoulders. He hadn't quite grasped the precise factors to trigger Tsuyoshi's skinship mood from the past few occasions.
"Nice pose," the photographer encouraged, who apparently didn't see the need to give instructions.
Kouichi was not exactly comfortable in that regretfully rare position, being rather conscious of the impending touch if he were to angle his face slightly differently; but he assumed Tsuyoshi had an amiable image in mind with that initiative and didn't stir while the arm still lingered, even after the flashes had died down.
Tsuyoshi gave a squeeze before he let go, and Kouichi had a sudden urge to talk more. "Speaking of parallel universes, have you seen the documentary..."
Tsuyoshi listened.
"You know," he responded at the end of the exposition, "I think that 'cause and effect' line is the perfect place to stop."
He let Kouichi's arguments follow their steps back to the dressing room, chuckling.
Pity that the multiverse documentary might be the only thing Kouichi would remember about this promo, but after all, the honesty that gave birth to those words he would remember was the very same trait that made the hugs stiff and the ramblings impassive.
This was the one universe they've got, indeed.

Note:
Could anyone tell me the occasion(s) when Tsuyoshi said he had at first thought Kouichi's surname could not be Doumoto? I can't remember where I've seen it and haven't yet found it from the several shows I've investigated so far. ^^0 Thanks..
Edit: Found one occurrence in DK with Pink Lady 2005.04.17, though I still feel like I've seen a more elaborate version somewhere else. =D; Thanks for the pointers!
