this history, called
my love for you
"I am bound to catch it from you after so many years," Kouichi says. "This, now, is certainly your fault."
Tsuyoshi chuckles, every radiant sound resonating with Kouichi's own delight. "That must be the most romantic line I have ever heard coming from your mouth."
The bluntness surprises slightly, but it does not occur to him to question the obvious confidence that there is no need to clarify what 'this' refers to exactly.
"I am not going to cheapen this to sex," Kouichi replies, the tone turning out gentler than the casual remark he has intended it to be.
"Why have you never asked me?" Tsuyoshi asks for the first time in eighteen years.
The ensuing silence is unexpectedly peaceful, possibly owing to the long-standing truth communicating unbarred through their eyes instead.
Kouichi weighs thoughts against words, and decides that honesty does not always need a voice. "You don't need to worry about it."
"While I know many a strange thing turn you on..." Tsuyoshi ignores Kouichi's protesting laughter, "For you to do this in between work, is it my fault?"
Tsuyoshi has no intention to confront Kouichi for an action he himself will not claim innocence from, and he speaks purely to return due respect for the matter that he can read in the unflinching way Kouichi is facing it.
All his usual methods to dispel awkwardness hardly seem appropriate in this situation, so Kouichi settles with a plain acknowledgement. "Sorry for that."
Tsuyoshi responds with a small smile, but the fleeting hesitation gives away the fact that he has been listening to Kouichi for the past few minutes.
"Oh, this is awkward," Kouichi remarks with a laugh.
The first thing his line of sight has bumped into upon exiting the stall is the familiar back at the washing basin, and Kouichi can tell it is not a mere manifestation of his lingering delirium simply because he has stopped feeling guilty many years ago.

papersnow.net [*] History: meant to be read backwards.
I was trying to make it reasonably sensible from both directions (semi-palindrome?) as far as possible before the strange flow of the plot should begin to hint at the intended direction, which is why I hope the readers will read it normally at first. =P Many thanks if you've read up to here, and kindly let me know if it can be understood without the explanation? ^^0
