I actually don't think they are that similar despite this comparison. I just they share some definite similarities. I only thought of it because I saw a lot of people like myself who seemed to like them both the best and it got me to wondering. :)
Newkirk & McCoy are my favorite of each series as well. (Excepting a teenage crush on Chekov. LOL) You may have a point that they have somethings in common that appeal to their fans.

Thinking about it Kirk and Hogan are sort of similar characters too, but then I think that comes down to the 1960's and that type of MC was popular then.
Although that being said while I was never a big Hogan fan, I do still like Kirk a lot (more than I expected).
