Revisiting 4 Kids One Piece

Nov 20, 2011 16:06

I've been in a One Piece mood lately (probably because I put a bunch of the character songs back on my IPOD) and I was revisiting some old AMV's and then for old time sake I looked at some of the 4-Kids edit ( Read more... )

Hmm. I know 4kids gets a lot of criticism (and snark) for their dub changes (and there are some that I find ridiculous, too, like changing Angel Cards to Fairly Cards in Yu-Gi-Oh), but for the most part, I think they do a fairly good job of dubbing animes. The voices are cast well, in my opinion, and become so ingrained in the characters that I can't hear them as anything else, and other dubs or even the originals just sound off.

But, anyway, it's up to individual opinions. I just happen to like 4kids dubs, usually. ^^

Well I guess we disagree on what constitutes a good dub: for me it isn't excessive localization, dumbing down the product, and using fake accents in replace of genuine voice acting. Oh and trying to be politically correct but removing all cultural references to Japan in the process (which is hypocritical at best).

But thankfully 4-Kids isn't really around anymore & now One Piece at least has a good dub so it's more something I can laugh about, before it was just depressing (although some people who had series ruined by 4-Kids were never so lucky).

I don't mean to sound rude but this is something I feel strongly about. I am not antidub but definitely anti editing

I don't think they removed all references to Japan; they kept all sorts of things in Pokémon (including a Kabuki performance), and Yugi and Seto in Yu-Gi-Oh didn't even get their names changed.

I've never felt that 4kids "ruined" a series for me--if anything, Pokémon was ruined after they lost the license. The new voices are so *horrible*.

Then again, voices are everything for me, so it makes sense that I would look at that before anything else...

Well the Pokemon dub is one of 4-Kids few better efforts but it is also aimed at a younger audience than most anime so hence 4-Kids didn't have to change as much.

And I definitely care about voices too but I dislike the voice acting of most 4-Kids dubs/

And 4-Kids definitely removes references to Japanese culture in their dubs. No maybe not everything but enough for me to think they are stuck in the 1980's.

Although perhaps we disagree because One Piece is pretty much universally considered one of the worst things 4-Kids has done. You are not a fan of One Piece and don't understand where I am coming from.

I don't mind minor censoring for TV Broadcast as long as there is an uncut version released on video (which of course 4-kids didn't do).

Not to mention their excessive edits were stupid and inane and the voices were some of the worst I ever heard. I would rather listen to someone put their nails down a chalkboard that's how bad it was. lol

But I actually do enjoy some dubs. I mean I definitely prefer subs overall but some dubs are almost on par with the sub and it is fun to listen to a different interpretation of the series for me. My main concern is they keep the spirit of the series. And I actually think the Funi OP dub does that (well at least what I've heard of it).

Yeah I am not even sure what they were editing there unless it was an edit for the sake of an edit. Who knows with 4-Kids. lol
