Great Article on Fanfiction from Time Magazine

Got this from mangaka_chan and reposting it here because I know I have a lot of fanfic writers on my FL who I think will be interested.

The article mainly deals with Harry Potter fanfiction but what it says definitely applies to all fanfic. And what's nice the author actually did their homework. I can't tell you how many times I read an article on something

Oh those Star Trek stories sound like they would be really fun to read. :D

I am guessing the stuff you could buy in stores was officially endorsed so yeah that would be something like official fanfiction, even though they don't call it that.

No one charges for fanfiction but I guess back before the Internet they had to charge for shipping costs and producing the magazines that fanfiction came in (but I am sure/hope no one made a profit off that)

I think I read this article before. Although Harry Potter and Twilight are not my cup of tea, the topic is very accurate to what is happening in fanfiction right now. I especially like the last paragraph. It's exciting just to think of all the possibilities for writers.

I enjoy the Harry Potter books but I never read any fanfiction (well besides a one shot someone wrote for me). Twilight I am not a fan of at all though. But I guess they used those as examples because they are two very well known fandoms. :)

And yeah I am very impressed with the accuracy of this article. What they wrote can apply to most fandoms I think, the big ones and the small ones.

I also like that they presented both sides of the argument even though I don't agree with the anti-fanfiction side (the only time I do agree with the anti-side is when the fanfiction deals with real people (except maybe historical figures) like in RPS or RPF that I am not for.

I absolutely agree with you. I admit that I used to like RPF in AU settings (which tends to read like original fiction just with real people's names) but the fans themselves are getting a little too crazy for me. They start thinking that some of things presented in the fics actually apply in real life and get upset when it is suggested otherwise. Case in point: Supernatural RPF. (icon applies)
