Newkirk & Carter really are like Laurel & Hardy

Yes a Hogan's Heroes post. Probably because I have been reading a lot of Hogan's Heroes fanfiction recently catching up with what I missed before for the Papa Bear Awards. The nomination round is driving me crazy because I have like 5 potential stories I want to nominate in each category and to make it worse a limited number of authors. I feel bad ( Read more... )

I've been enjoying the marathon, as well, though I have to catch up on the ones that aired during the night. XD;

And yes, that particular scene definitely looks like it came out of the L & H school of comedy. XD

And good question whether it was something they came up with. (I know there was an ep where Larry, as Carter, did an L & H impression, too...)

Richard & Larry actually wrote an episode or two of Hogan's Heroes. Unfortunately they were never produced but what I would give to be able to read them (even if they weren't any good at the very least I am sure they had a lot of Newkirk & Carter in them).

I did know about that, actually. I wonder if it would've gone into production if the series hadn't been canceled. Oh, if only...

If I ever could talk to Richard Dawson I would say I don't want your autograph, I just want to read your Hogan's Heroes script And for you to write an autobiography. I think my requests are small right? XD

Wholeheartedly with you on that! XD

Oh now that you mention it I do remember Carter;s impersonation as well. Richard used to do Laurel all the time on Match Game (and I think on Feud sometimes too).

Yeah I wonder if there were more seasons then maybe their episode could have been produced. I did read that they were told that they the series didn't want to take work away from the actual writers. But they could have at least produced one of their episodes. I really would have liked to see what they came up with and how they saw their characters.

I would also love to be able to read the scripts for the episodes. It would be so fascinating to see how they personally thought Carter and Newkirk should be portrayed, as well as the rest of the Heroes.

I know sadly at this point I don't think we will get to read them. We can only imagine what they contained.

Unfortunately, I believe you're correct. One can only dream what sort of crazy stories they might have come up with.

I wonder if it was a little of both. Richard & Larry sort of started this Laurel & Hardy thing and the writers wrote more of it into the script. I can totally see that.

Oh, well, we'll probably never know what it was about...

Yeah I guess at this point there is little chance we will get to see it. I mean if they talk about the script but don't show it either they no longer have it or they don't want to show it. :(

I may be wrong, but I think that there were more "Laurel & Hardy"-like moments during the later seasons, which could mean that the writers were inspired by the way Richard and Larry were acting from time to time ;)

Somewhere I read that Richard even wrote several episodes for HH. But then again, he also stated in an interview that he was currently writing his autobiography...

Yeah I think inspired by them is a very good guess. I think it is probably a combination of them doing their own thing and the writers adding extra scenes. :)

Well Richard wrote a lot of stuff when he was younger. He either never finished or things didn't get published. I doubt we will see his autobiography at this point even if he started it earlier.
