Newkirk & Carter really are like Laurel & Hardy
Yes a Hogan's Heroes post. Probably because I have been reading a lot of Hogan's Heroes fanfiction recently catching up with what I missed before for the Papa Bear Awards. The nomination round is driving me crazy because I have like 5 potential stories I want to nominate in each category and to make it worse a limited number of authors. I feel bad about that but when it comes to Hogan's Heroes fanfic I have my favorites who I feel capture the characters the way I see them.
So anyways after watching the Laurel & Hardy marathon on TCM I was reminded me of Lebeau calling Newkirk & Carter, Laurel & Hardy in To the Gestapo With Love. At first I just figured the writers were coming up with a popular comedy duo but after watching this marathon Newkirk & Carter are a lot more like Laurel & Hardy than I thought. Or really Newkirk takes the Ollie role and Carter the Stan role. Of course I don't think Carter is quite as clueless as Laurel or Newkirk quite as "abusive" as Hardy but the same type of comedy routine is there. Just take the scene from this image it can totally come from a Laurel and Hardy short, even how Newkirk waited to show Carter what he did and then hit him.
And now I am wondering if the writers developed this in the characters or it is something that Richard & Larry somewhat developed themselves and the writers added on. After all they were good friends and they did adlib from time to time. I know for a fact that Richard was a Laurel & Hardy fan as he often impersonates them (well he mainly impersonates Stan Laurel but he does Ollie's tie thing). Just some food for thought.
And this is something else you may or may not know. Richard & Larry actually wrote an episode or two of Hogan's Heroes. Unfortunately they were never produced but what I would give to be able to read them (even if they weren't any good at the very least I am sure they had a lot of Newkirk & Carter in them). If I ever could talk to Richard Dawson I would say I don't want your autograph, I just want to read your Hogan's Heroes script And for you to write an autobiography. I think my requests are small right? XD
