It is a prisoner of war films on TCM tonight (for the start of memorial day weekend). They are showing Stalag 17. The Great Escape and Bridge over the River Kwai. Since Hogan's Heroes I've had an obsession with these type of movies and I especially like Stalag 17 & The Great Escape out of these 3. Both excellent films ( Read more... )

Kwai sort of dragged for me at parts although I do really like Holden, Guiness, & Hayakawa in it.

And I agree with you about the ending for Stalag 17. I think Wilder really had a knack for endings. His films had some of my favorites.

And yeah the ending of Great Escape is so sad. I do like that they showed the truth of course. Although there are some things that are embellished (like McQueen's entire character) in general the movie stuck relatively close to reality.

Btw, sorry I haven't been on here much lately; we're in the process of buying a house, and I am drowning in paperwork! LOL Hopefully this weekend I'll have some time to get caught up.

Awww don't worry about it. Moving can be stressful. I hope everything goes well. :)

The film is based on a fictional book so I don't think they were going for accuracy. I think the only accurate thing about the film was there actually was a bridge/railway built in Burma by POW's.

But not only did they leave out the Australians there were also a larger portion of Dutch prisoners who worked on the bridge. However your mom is incorrect there were British & Americans (and also Canadians) who worked on the bridge as well. In fact in terms of causalities British were number 1 followed by Australians and then the Dutch.

The film was British so I am guessing that is why they mainly focused on the British side of things. But I do think it is sad that most WWII films don't represent a lot of the nations that also took part in the war.

All of these are great, but Kwai was a bit lacking...

Did you catch The Best Years of Our Lives?
