Have you read Crime and Punishment the whole way through? Raskolnikov is certainly a compelling character, especially with all the inner conflict Dostoevsky lays out for us...And a big yay for Jean Valjean - love that guy!

Any particular reason Javert is your fave villain? I actually found him really three-dimensional and sympathetic, at least as far as villains go...which is why I like him! :)

If it's OK, I'm gonna steal this meme from you - looks fun!

Yes I love it, although funny thing when I tried to read it back in HS I couldn't get past the part where he had the dream about them brutally killing a horse it upset me so much. I am glad I gave it another chance though. :D

Well Javert is more an antagonist than a clear cut villain but that makes him more compelling. Obviously he does feel what he is doing is right. For him justice means everything. I also feel Javert is a representation of a corrupt system which makes him interesting to me even beyond his role as an antagonist.

And yes steal away.

Heh - yeah, I remember that part of "C and P". Most kids in my class hated the book, but I think it's definitely worth at least one read. Glad you enjoyed it!

Definitely! Javert is very interesting, especially as a representation of the system. My mom watched some movie version of it, which totally butchered his suicide scene (from what she described to me, that's how it sounded, anyway). That was one of the most powerful parts of the book for me, and definitely shows what a complete character he is. :)

Wow I am surprised I always felt C&P was one of those classics that most people really like. Well then again I didn't read it for school so I have nothing to support that statement.

Yeah I love Javert's suicide scene as well. There is a lot of meaning behind that scene and how much it says about his character. Like even though he sees Jean Valjean as a good man he can't accept that world view.

Speaking of Les Mis adapations (a lot of them at least the ones made in the US) are way too short to fully grasp the book. However I did see a close to 5 hour French version directed by Raymond Bernard from the 1930's which is just awesome. It makes a few changes and leaves things out but it's definitely the most complete version of the story.

Great list.

Love, love, love The Little Prince. Loved the book and loved the cartoon.

I might steal this too...
