Everlasting_Day was the first to recommend this to me awhile back and since then I have heard a lot about the film & the book. I decided to go with the film because it was available instantly on Netflix. And despite the US DVD having bad subs (from what I've read) to my nice surprise the instant version on Netflix has the correct subs. At least if I am going by

The book is much, much gorier, disturbing and full-on. There are more characters and subplots, but ultimately I don't think it's an essential read if you've seen the film. I enjoyed it an awful lot, but you're not missing out anything essential unless you're really interested in Eli's backstory. Basically I preferred the film.

I just read this which I probably shouldn't have because it spoils some details and from the sounds of it I think I might enjoy the film more too. The book sounds more disturbing while the film was more melancholy. I would like to learn more about Eli so I still might eventually read it..

It does interest me that Eli's gender is more pronounced in the book. It is *shown* in the film but I am not sure if everyone would truly get that scene.

I heard the ending scene is slightly different in the movie. I like it is because it can be taken as sweet or something else so it has this sort of ambiguous feel to it.
