Everlasting_Day was the first to recommend this to me awhile back and since then I have heard a lot about the film & the book. I decided to go with the film because it was available instantly on Netflix. And despite the US DVD having bad subs (from what I've read) to my nice surprise the instant version on Netflix has the correct subs. At least if I am going by Read more... )

Let The Right One In is the best vampire movie ever! I'm glad you finally saw it. =)

Yey, I'm really glad you liked it and you got the correct subtitles, too!

The book is much, much gorier, disturbing and full-on. There are more characters and subplots, but ultimately I don't think it's an essential read if you've seen the film. I enjoyed it an awful lot, but you're not missing out anything essential unless you're really interested in Eli's backstory. Basically I preferred the film.

I was going to watch it regardless of what the subtitles were but I am really glad they ended up being the better ones.

I just read this which I probably shouldn't have because it spoils some details and from the sounds of it I think I might enjoy the film more too. The book sounds more disturbing while the film was more melancholy. I would like to learn more about Eli so I still might eventually read it..

The tone is the main difference, really. The books is a straight-up, ballsy horror novel while the film isn't really that, despite being a vampire movie.

I definitely recommend the book; it's one of my favorites ever. There is a lot in it that's not in the movie, some of which is disturbing, but it really adds a lot to the story, explains things that the movie doesn't, and (I think) makes the ending even more satisfying.

I will probably eventually give the book a try but I am not really sure if I would enjoy all the additional disturbing details in this case (even though I usually do prefer the book to the film).

It does interest me that Eli's gender is more pronounced in the book. It is *shown* in the film but I am not sure if everyone would truly get that scene.

Thanks that helps to know it gets less disturbing as the story goes on and I will probably give it a try eventually. I am sure some of the details will fill in gaps (and there are some in the film) but overall I do think the film is still very strong without all those extra details.

I heard the ending scene is slightly different in the movie. I like it is because it can be taken as sweet or something else so it has this sort of ambiguous feel to it.
