How I would have Ended the X-Files

Now I am not really sure what got me thinking of the X-Files. Well okay it is this Really Fun Video. But I was thinking how would I have ended X-Files. Well first of all I would have ended after season 7. Season 7 wasn't the strongest season to begin with but at least it still had Mulder and thus could still be thought of as the X-Files I don't ( Read more... )

To be honest, I view season eight as deeply necessary and important. I don't think you could've wrapped it all up in season seven, and eight continues a lot of the plot elements that seven set-up and resolves them. It even gives Mulder and Scully a happy ending, albeit with the baby - I don't really mind that aspect but I know some people do

I still don't think there's all that much wrong with season eight quality-wise either - I think it's a great season of telly. I mean, yes it's not Mulder and Scully for the first half - but he's back in the second and pops up a couple of times before then! It's awesome seeing Scully as "the believer" (at least I thought it was). The story-arc gets kicked up the arse and becomes exciting again! Stuff from previous seasons gets resolved! It's probably the most consistent batch of episodes in the show's history since... maybe since season three - I can think of precisely one sub-par episode (SurekillI think season nine would've been much stronger if it hadn't been season nine, but season one of an X ( ... )

While I do think Scully becoming the "believer" in the partnership with Dogget was interesting. Thematically I don't think it was that important to have almost 1/2 a season without Mulder. I think the series could have ended with Scully becoming more of a believer (which she was at the end of season 7) but still the logical scientific one. As for season 8 I will be honest I think the only episode that was really worthwhile was Empedocles. I do agree that Season 9 though was by far the worst season.

Season 7 was definitely not the strongest season but if the series ended there (maybe with a few changes to the final episode) it could have ended with a bang instead of a whimper. The show was kept on past its prime sadly. I don't even think I would have wanted to see the series continue with new agents because its not Mulder & Scully that were stale it was the cases/conspiracy.

I like your ending ideas. I would gladly watch that show.

I suffered through season 8, and have only seen a smattering of season 9. And I've never actually seen the last episode. By season 9 it wasn't even the X-Files anymore, because Mulder and Scully and their dynamic was what made the show work (in my opinion). Doggett and Reyes just did not have the same chemistry as Mulder and Scully.

It's really a shame what happened to the show at the end because it really was one of the best series of the 90's. But then again X-Files is definitely not alone when it comes to staying on air way past its prime. It's one of the big reasons I gave up on American TV. I don't think I can take the heartache.

And I agree I did love the individual stories (the mythology got on my nerves after awhile) but both Mulder & Scully were the heart of the series. Take one of them away and there just wasn't a point to it.

As for the finale, it wasn't horrible just completely unremarkable and the twist about the conspiracy was stupid. I will say the last few minutes with Mulder & Scully were done nicely though.
