I'm downloading the episode now, so I might not be able discuss with you until tomorrow (because of the little con I'm going to), but I agree that it is getting better. I'm really looking forward to what they do at the end--with the characters, the story, and, yes, even the love triangle. XD Seriously, though, I can't predict what's going to happen from here, which makes it kind of fun.
I definitely agree that Ranka and Sheryl are more interesting without Alto. I kept waiting for him to be a more interesting character, but even after episode twenty I still think he's terribly boring. I want one of the girls to be with him because it would make them happy, but other than that I don't care so much.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing it. :D I'll try and watch it and comment before I leave, but we'll see if I have time.
I think you will like it. I really enjoyed Ranka in this episode and I think she really became her own person which she needed to do. Well you will see.

I just finally watched this episode. I really enjoy this show, and even though the last two episodes were really difficult from an emotional standpoint, the storytelling really is excellent. Honestly, though, aren't all Macross series full of love triangles? I actually think the love triangle is important as well, because love is one of the major themes of the show... most of the main characters are adolescents, and most of them have been hurt in the past and it's the love that they feel for other characters or other characters feel for them that has helped them to mature. I also have to disagree about Ranka and Sheryl being more interesting without Alto. Neither of them would have changed as much as they both have changed if it weren't for Alto. Although he himself I suppose isn't actually as interesting a character as the two of them, he's important as the motivation for Ranka and Sheryl. I loved how Ranka put it when she was luring the Varja onto Island 3... that even though she has been singing for him this whole time, her song

Well quite honestly I am not a fan of love triangles (two characters fighting for the love of another) in any series. There are some series where I think it is handled well, but most not at all. And here where we have Ranka/Sheryl singing in competition for Alto or kissing him because of the other girl then it is bad writing to me. I like when female characters have more self respect then that.
And personally I like both Sheryl and Ranka a lot but their romance with Alto I could care less who ends up with him *shrugs*
As for Brera/Ranka I've been thinking that a long time. But I also think he might be her brother.
